Yes! Garage rock! I'd forgotten that was a genre, but this and Dream both have that vibe.
"still think it’s probably their weakest but mostly just cause some of the second half isn’t super memorable" - the second half grows on you big time my man. "Cutting" gives me shivers now, but on first listen was kinda ehhh. "Waiting" and "Habits" too, shits got layers.

Cutting Off the Corners hit me very hard. It is possibly my favorite song on the album now.

On first listen, I'm pretty blown away.
I think softening some of their edges and leaning into their zany pop sensibilities was the logical progression for these guys in much the same way that Jeff Rosenstock did with the end of Bomb the Music Industry's time and his transition into a solo artist. They are just really damn good at writing memorable hooks, so it's nice to see all the pretense come off with an honest-to-god POP-punk album. Not that their earlier stuff was bad or anything, it just seems like this is the kind of record these guys have always wanted to make

idk why i keep trying with this band

I feel the same way as Colton. if I'm true to my heart, I like their early stuff better cuz usually I just want heartless energy.
But I also understand what Odal was saying. band has grown.

Having re-listened to pup's first three records, I just can't resist the urge to lower this one from 4.0 to 3.5. comparison does hurt.

Starting to grow on me a bit. Totally Fine's ending will be a staple during their live shows, such a PUP moment

Having read the review once again, the expressions were very precise, each aspect was mentioned and I can indeed relate to most of the things said in it. And it encouraged to embrace the changes and attempts of PUP. But after all, I find myself still too conservative at heart. Unable to "embrace the murk" with determination while their previous works have been too warm and dazzling.

Yeah I really like the way they used synths and pianos here (despite the mixing making them almost inaudible at some points) but the production was just a bad idea with terrible execution

The only real flaws with this that I can find are that Four Chords II and III probably should have added something more, and a couple songs are sort of forgettable. Outside of that, it's all killer for me.

"Cutting the Corners" hit a little different today. My family dog is aging and, as I learned last Thursday, doesn't have much time left. So... yeah that got me.

Sorry to hear about your pup :-(
Edit: wasn't trying to make an insensitive pun

Lol thanks man and don't worry. I knew there was a pun imbedded in there when I commented. As a 15 yr old Aussie going on 16 it was inevitable, but it certainly doesn't make it easier.

Yeah nothing makes losing a loved one easier. Best wishes man.

Production flops like this really bum me out. Too bad! I feel like Pup's post-Morbid Stuff potential was completely squandered.
