their LP before Time Skiffs was really different imo but you’re right that they’ve sounded like the Dead since 2018 or whatever. I just think this one is better than anything on Time Skiffs and that the third part is beautiful

its nice. i'll give it another few listens.
i'm still of the opinion that "cherokee" is the best song here and their best song in a decent while. great tune

“Cherokee” was the one I liked best as a live demo before this came out. It’s really cool. Weirdly enough I’ve grown to like the Big Ben song a lot too. Car keys starts hot

Fuck this band don’t @ me
|

i know u fw here comes the indian dont lie to me
|

I just deeply hate everything they’ve done since fall be kind, they feel like an uninspired parody of themselves and none of the members can seem to un-pigeonhole their solo work either
|
| |
Ultimate “the gimmick has worn off” band
|
| |
ok thats acceptable besides centipede hz i dont really love anything after fall be kind
their early work is basically amazing across the board though. HCTI, feels, sung tongs, campfire songs all rule
|
| |
Centipede hz was okay, it was a gradual process of becoming exasperatingly redundant after fall Be kind and that album was just the beginning of it so it’s not as bad as a lot of stuff that came after it for sure
|
| |
definitely think theyve lost a bit of the spark though and that comes back to the homogenization of their sound that i talked about.
their early work was delightfully weird, varied, childlike and jubilant. no two albums were really the same but they were all uniquely anco. just wish they would try something new again

awesome band. I think painting with coming between centipede and time skiffs troubles the narrative a bit even if it kind of sucks in a lot of ways, it’s very vibrant—so obnoxious that maybe it furthers the parody narrative, but at least they’re doing different things

I don’t get how you hear the burglars and royal and desire back to back and think they’re treading water they’re just not that good anymore. but I really like the new song. To be fair I didn’t like the other new songs as much.

“lost a bit of the spark though and that comes back to the homogenization of their sound that i talked about.”
Yes
“ their early work was delightfully weird, varied, childlike and jubilant. no two albums were really the same but they were all uniquely anco”
Yes, very genuine. It’s like the success caught up to them and suddenly they felt this immense pressure to sound like animal collective that has neutered the wonder of it all

Painting with is straight up worthless art. Absolute trash.

for sure but you’d probably like it more if you had another skiffsishhzish full band album, I know I’m conflating your and ryus’ takes and I guess I’m taking slight issue with ryus’

I guess I’m talking to someone who has heard defeat and who hasn’t tho. It was amazing live, really brought me back

Took a shower while thinking deeply about why I feel so strongly about it almost as if it’s a betrayal lmao
I think it’s that there was always such a youthful magic to their music that was absolutely crucial to the enigma and charm of it all. Youth of course is fleeting, and it feels like they’ve been fighting against that inevitable loss ever since the beginning of the 2010’s, which I find very frustrating as someone who turns 31 this year, grew up alongside this band, and has already accepted and mourned the loss of my salad days lmao. The magic of youth is DEAD, AnCo. Your music feels like you’re trying to resuscitate the corpse of my adolescent quixotism and it makes me want to punch a squirrel.
|
| |
Modern AnCo is a bunch of forty year old men trying to convince a bunch of thirty year olds that Santa Claus is still real

does time skiffs feel particularly as if it’s trying to be a young man’s band? I could see that complaint with painting with.

perhaps, though, they're simply making the music they want to make? i think you've made a ton of assumptions on what motivates their songwriting and are now getting upset by those invented motivations. i don't think outgrowing a band has anything to do with what the band is doing
