That combo does sound horrific on paper, probably should have known better

I like it. Midwest Emo often has a sprinkle of whine. This is whine with a faux-country twang. It works.

Okay I'll rephrase...
Both those things sound horrific on paper, so combining them unsurprisingly served to magnify their impact

Haha pretty much. You either like it or you don't. Maybe it's something one could grow accustomed to. I remember finding Mike Kinsella's vocal delivery off-putting at first, but it won me over in the end.

Jeez this really sinks its hooks in after 15 odd listens. So good.

Yeah this is probably their most listenable album for me!

This is indeed super "listenable", although I find all their albums to be that way. Will probably be one of my most-played albums of the year, even if I don't think it's AOTY caliber.

All pingrove records do seem to give you as much as you put in. The more time I spend with these songs, the more I love them.

I’ve only been able to spin a few times but it’s definitely growing on me. Don’t think it tops Cardinal (that one has a relative rawness/ramshackle quality that sets it a bit above for me) but possibly their best since then.

All their albums are interchangeable 4s for me, picking a favorite depends on the day. For a while, I was convinced Marigold was my favorite but I'm no longer sold on that.

I need to go back to Skylight I guess - that one is solidly below the others for me. I love this band but I think their biggest weakness (ironically also possibly their biggest strength) is that they have a very specific and fairly unique vibe such that their songs are always immediately recognizable as theirs, but it also takes a long time for them to distinguish themselves from each other because of that.

Agreed @Boney, I do think that all Pinegrove albums are pretty big growers for that reason. However, Skylight has improved the most with time of all of them for me, so definitely worth some additional investment. It's sort of an odd album given how many very short songs it has, but they're all quite great.
