Sometimes I wonder how Spotify tracks plays if you restart the song before it ends which I have a tendency to do when I'm addicted to one. Actually I just wonder in general how they track shit, because I never feel like it's accurate. They had ef as my 4th most played artist which is just absurdly inaccurate. Maybe top 15..

Well as someone who loves numbers/statistics and would often note or tabulate random things....
I can give you something adjacent to the answer lol. On iTunes back in the day, if a song played or I skipped on with less than 10 seconds left, it counted as a play. But if I started it over, it would never count as a play. I have a feeling that with the advertising structure, Spotify has a time threshold where it counts as a play, even if you start the song over.

After a song has been played for 30 seconds or has completed (less than a 30 sec track) it counts as a play.
This is my experience with having an artist profile on streaming. I think this is true for Spotify and AM but not 100% certain. Could test it though

Ya I'm a nerd too, which y'all reminded me to check my last.fm scrobbles because I was trying to keep track of it. Unfortunately I only started tracking it in May but based on the results I think it's the exact same thing Spotify reports. Ef being ranked so high is absolutely baffling beyond belief. I don't listen to them that much and only 1 of their tracks is in my top 20 most played.

>Listened to 4:30 length track and restarting it at 0-60 seconds = no but tried it at 2 minutes onwards it counted as a new play. However you have to restart completely. If you listen up to 1 second left and drag it back to the first 5 seconds of the track it won't count.

>In general the amount of individual plays seems wildly inaccurate for me, most likely due to my tendency to drag the track time around instead of letting it play through. Especially if you go full ADHD and just listen to a breakdown 10 times in a row before letting the track complete lmao. I feel bad for the artists because I might spend a good 10 minutes on 1 track and it's not recording more than a single play.
