Doof-

are you 40?

'are you 40?'
yeah, it isn't my music, emo stuff was the enemy when I was in my twenties, can't stand American bratty vocals
But I checked it and I didn't 1 out of 5 it so open minded as you can get ;P
I guess my reaction here was I was surprised at that band coming up in comparison because they seem totally different in approach/target audience.

I like this though and there's a little brat in there but not overwhelming and they just have the personality and swagger - would have been into these at 15 even more then than now probably

feel ya bro, people like what they like.
"bratty vocals" as a critique seems a bit aggressive and disingenuous

This is solid, but I don't get the infatuation with it outside of the punk circles.

I guess I mean there weren't really the emo 'whine' vocals until maybe the late '90s in any prevalence, and then the whole (...) cleans/growls thing also seemed to appear early '00s and both those trends made my soul curl up and die a bit.
Seemed like taking formulaic and same'y elements to the ultimate conclusion - but it is fine, it wasn't meant for me I get it lol

"don't get the infatuation with it outside of the punk circles."
hmm, i think this album transcends any "genre tag". It's a catchy, poppy, heavy, danceable record

This is definitely a crossover record yeah, has mainstream rock (maybe even pop at times) appeal.
Was surprised to see Kerrang made the previous album their album of the year - that shows the potential for crossover appeal in rock circles.

To me vocals and lyrics will forever be the least important element in music, so for the most part I'm okay with anything long as everything else is up to snuff
I think there may be like 2 or 3 vocal performances I outright hated

yeah i think they hit it out of the park Doof,
as far as a crossover punk/harcore-pop record... they're inventing it and props to them.
might bump to 4.5 later....

Pika, vocals are the ultimate deal breaker for me - I guess they can be poor but not distractingly so and that's alright (just), but the minute they distract it is game over.
Lyrics a lot less important, though if they can't both sound ok and read ok then at least you'd hope they could achieve one of the two.
