Villain is his best vocal work. That song is just auditory heaven. He has such a beautiful voice. I didn’t see any issues really. But man that song… best thing here outside of Mombasa. I really feel like I can pick moments out of here that are better than some of the best moments on Sunbather, despite Sunbather being the better album. Can’t say the same for the rest of their discog

For their first time making an album like this I think it’s solid. The band is doing some serious work here. I’m just not always feeling the vocals and the vocal melodies. Like the section after the first chorus of The Gnashing. Loses me every time. Still, there are plenty of good moments too. I can see potential for them to improve on this after some touring and such. Really digging the opening track and Villain.

my personal one is actually much different. every song just sounds like steely dan

that is interesting and agreeable and will have little impact on the vast conduits of shite i will impose upon it

I mean literally everyone saw bad reviews coming. It’s no surprise. I just think they’re phenomenal at what they do. I’m perplexed by the backlash but at the same time lord I’ve been following this band since like 2010 so it’s no surprise they get hate.

"literally everyone saw bad reviews coming"
??? i haven't seen a single negative review for this album including this one. the whole metal band plays non-metal music o no narrative isn't really representative at all of most critics' standpoints and if you look at this album's metacritic, you'll see most reactions are actively rewarding them for taking a step closer to mainstream territory
the only Dfhvn that had warranted potential for scathing backlash imo was ochl because of that album's bloat and sheer tastelessness, but since sput is as immune as ever to both when they come from popular metal acts, that had a free pass here

yeah, fairly certain that in 2021, almost no one would dismiss this based off of the context of their discog. it is not shocking or interesting to change directions in the way that they did and it has honestly seemed inevitable that they would do exactly this lol. not even that is why it sucks. besides the drumming at times, it just sucks
|
| |
yeah tbh despite the many things that are not great about this, the fact that they changed their style this way to begin with is defs an overall positive somehow
*controversial*
