This is kinda annoying and I think the TDH comparison is actually v helpful as to why:
from the large chunk of lyrics and synopsis I read, this dude is far, far better at crafting convincing characters and relationships than ol' boi Casey, not mention setting them into verse and rhythm and multiple rhythms at once jfc what a time to be alive, BUT
if there's one thing TDH did very right, it was crafting an engaging rock opera across a load of well implemented and narratively cogent changes of style - that shit was so entertaining that I never really cared whether or not it was meaningful, whereas this is one neverending emoindiefolk traipse that wears its runtime like the slowest year of your life passing at masochist's tempo. like, there are peaks but this palette and troubadour whinge aesthetic wears itself to death
guess which of those two things is more important when it comes to making a good soppy rock record ig. don't regret those 100mins, but imma put a big bet on round 2

NO i feel that this has so much to it on literal paper that it's a crying shame to call it one-note but at the same time YES it's incredibly one note dammit u win

Yeah, I think y'all are pinpointing the only real issue I have too here. I actually find the emoindiefolk sound really well done, and am glad I can put this on and have a lot of the beautiful textures wash over me with some standout moments. but, as impressive as the lyrics are, it feels like they drive the music to the backseat, so the band has to basically find meandering motifs to repeat while the vocalist struggles to fit these incredibly dense allegories into the format of a song. i.e. Secretus Liber. also makes for some awkward vocal melodies as he tries to cram too many lyrics into some overly tight verses. overall, more into the music than the lyrics and want more space for the band to find its groove, like they did on the Prelude EP

Yeah i think prelude is actually better than this especially when it comes to demonstrating variety. However I love the very specific sound they do go for here so I'm willing to forgive them that. If it does turn out there is a second half to this already long LP I hope they go for some different soundscapes. Like it's weird cos neither grammatology nor prelude have this issue. Is it like we have a 9 part song it's gotta sound the same?

I basically agree with Lucman and Slex... While I tend to avoid albums this long and grandiose, and I have some gripes about some elements of this, something about it has me coming back to it quite a bit

This is great but it would be so much better if every song were in the key of F. No I will not elaborate
