This also made me think of the last MGMT record too for some reason. They also tried their hand at socially conscious synthpop that was mostly apolitical, but it succeeded because of the fact that many of the songs were absolutely fucking hilarious, and the music sounded fresh in spite of the clear throwback toward the 80s. It also makes me realise just how bad this album is by comparison.

"Tackling consumerism apolitically without humour usually results in anyone sounding like a bitter and hopelessly out of touch old man"

that's a pretty good observation

This is... fine, I guess. I prefer this style to something like Raven any day but the songs aren’t doing much for me

Last song is easily my fav

As I expected, most of the instrumental versions are an improvement. Still, hopefully he makes something totally different next.

It has some moments but really it is an uninspired work overall. Wilson needs to take a brake, as he has no gas left in the tank. Certainly not as dreadful as some are making it out it be

He needs a new main project, at the very least. Started this whole solo thing to push past the boundaries of his other projects, and Insurgentes and Grace really have that spark. Last few haven't, even HCE sounds cruise control-y in places

Hmmm almost checks out but Rainn Wilson is a 2.0 and Owen co-wrote Rushmore

Owen at #5 is a weak take purely because of his suit in Inherent Vice

Album is sadly pretty much what I expected.

You can't accuse Steven Wilson of playing it safe with this album as this is very different from what he's been doing since forever, but most of the music in here feel like he's really not playing to his strengths at all. Still too weird to truly be pop, lacking in memorable hooks and song structures. The rare few times where you feel he's sticking to his old roots (12 Things I Forgot is a very blatant example of that), the music becomes so cliched and predictable without any real feeling or mood to it.

Self and Eminent Sleaze fail because you can't condemn a hollow society while having your own music be equally hollow. That's akin to someone who's saying dumb things and when confronted about it later on, just go and claim "IT'S SATIRE MAN". Even without the words, the music itself isn't evocative of about anything. It feels like it's just... there.

Out of the lot, I like King Ghost, Man of the People, Count of Unease and parts of Personal Shopper. But about everything else in there feel like I wanna skip it instantly. And I only listened to the album once!

I feel like this style had potential, but he just failed to execute it.

I like half the songs here, the other half are forgettable. I don't love any of them.

First listen, sounds like he did a collaboration with Trent Reznor.

Many things being said in this thread, including this page, are how I feel.

The deluxe edition adds quality content for those who semi-liked this. A couple of the bonus tracks (not on the B-sides EP he released late last year) are really good.

There're also extended versions of King Ghost, Eminent Sleaze, and Self that expand on some of the instrumental content.

The instrumental version of the whole album is obviously an improvement on many of the songs imo
