Not that sieko's vocals sound particularly "out there" or "untradtional" to me to begin with, it just sounds bad

Mmm, I distinctly remember two big punk releases in 2019 that had everyone complaining about the vocals. You're doing work, Johnny, but I don't think distasteful vocals are a culture barrier.
Now that I think about it.... Seiko in a punk band would be amazing haha

that comment wasn't directed at you as much as Ledd's take and a range of similar responses i've seen here and elsewhere. i don't think those opinions are invalid or close-minded - i certainly remember struggling with these vocals a fair bit a couple of years ago! - although i think that some of them have been phrased gratuitously dismissively (not yours, Ledd)
i get why you'd hate these vocals beyond language/inflections (which, Luc, I think Ledd is right to pinpoint as a culture barrier), but having invested a fat ol' chunk of time into drawing the dots between seiko's musical background/influences, her lyrics, and the kind of confrontational and ig to a point subversive public image she holds (+ generally getting used to her sound), i think her voice being unpolished and unapologetically shrill is entirely appropriate for her platform and writing style
for me personally, this resonates a whole lot more now than it did when i went in blind. that doesn't mean i expect anyone to walk into this and feel the same, or even like it, but in the same way as you'd be right to suggest that a wider grounding in Tuvan throat singing *might* be conducive to a more representative impression of whatever work is in question there, it doesn't sit right for me to space out and see this music reduced to snap-takes about vocal style. if that came off as snappy against Ledd's comment, i apologise - ngl i'm tired and drained for unrelated reasons rn, and now that we've established (i hope) that no-one is being accused of being an aural xenophobe, it would make me happy if this thread could switch to bitching about which pokemon is worst or who on sput would would turn cannibal fastest if we ran out of supplies in the hunger games

Pink Tokarev side project! + her Ging Nang Boyz live cover from last year

Uh, I'd guess "Night on the Planet" or "Dakyoushi" for max. grating potential but if anyone wants to throw down on any of the others ig go with that

>but sometimes i wonder what my wordcounts were really in aid of
i know right i actually checked this in full because of the nontroversy and not because of the effort you put in lmao

"^this, basically. i wish ppl were more open minded about voices cuz i think there are so many vocalists in both the west and the rest of the world who have repeatedly proven that a non-traditional voice that might seem grating at first can actually be amazing if you give it some time, to the extent that "their voice just rubs me the wrong way" is never a valid critical opinion, although ofc it's a valid statement of personal preference. oh well"
I think Billie Holiday is a good example of this in the west. Some people just don't like the way her voice sounds, but she was an incredible and unique singer in the jazz world.

I don't think she fell off, but I outgrew her music a bit, or I think my tastes changed over the years away from this kind of Japanese music. Her older albums I still adore.

need to spend more time with this tbh. only really gave it one focused listen

The biggest Seiko fan I know (is from Brazil) told me he couldn't even bother listening more than once to Kintsugi... Pretty sure she's falling off, and she's aware of that, hence removing one piece of clothing with every new LP just like Charli did when she hit her ceiling. So it's a win-win for everyone.

doesn't that just imply she's gonna end up back at PINK? I'd take that as a win

i for one cant wait for the skinless, skeletal seiko album

I wish she stopped fooling around and release the long awaited sludge metal album we deserve from her. No really she'd be such a neat metal vocalist.

there's a certain harmony to a universe in which shiina ringo croons into pitch mod algorithms and seiko belts it over unwashed heathen riffs. i could live in peace
