^ I won't go that far. But ADtR are pretty dang bad, and not very metal at all.

Those groups are pop punk, but the exceptions, not the rule.

Imo all those bands take influence from so many other genres that I find it hard to call them "pop punk" bands in the same way Blink, Green Day, Alk3 or this is. Maybe my view of the genre/term is just too narrow

Their range are exactly the thing that lifts them above most of the genre tbh.

Lmaooo anyone who thinks there's more bad rap than good rap doesn't hear enough shit that isn't top 40. That's a super backpacker/head thing to say, but it's just the truth. That's like judging country by what you hear on pop radio, which would be a large mistake.

And it's not even about the ratio; the standard pop punk sound is just not a great one to me. It usually just ranges from bad to passable. Like I generally don't enjoy the traditional songwriting tenants of modern pop-punk. (Retro pop punk would be something like The Ramones.) I'm not usually into the samey melodicism, happy power chords, too clean production, vocal inflections, lyrics, or much of anything anything.

"Samey melodicism, vocal inflections and lyrics applies to a huge amount of rap as well though"

uhhh

"Samey melodicism": ONLY in those top 40 kind of pop rappers, but even people like Anderson Pak., Tyler the Creator, and Freddie Gibbs are popular and prove themselves more diverse in their range of influences. Sounds like Lil Baby, Trippie, Uzi, Thugger, Migos, and Drake are all just a drop in the sea of rap. And they even sound more disparate in comparison than any two normal pop punk bands.

"vocal inflections": Literally only top 40 shit. That's not the only kind of rap.

"lyrics" I'd much rather hear about robbin', killin', drug dealin', money, and hoes than most pop punk lyrics. Plus the best rap has wordplay, puns, and quite thoughtful, introspective, or political lyrics.

Lyrics are almost never impressive so if that's your angle for compensating for shit instrumentation then you're at a loss to me.

"Boring vocal inflections is more of an issue for me among underground or lesser known rappers."

"I've never found wordplay and puns to be particularly clever or impressive aside from a few rappers who are exceptionally good at it tbh"

I probably just don't like your taste in hip hop then. Doesn't seem like you've heard the best of the genre.

I mean, I probably like stuff you don't like too. lol I can't claim to know best, ultimately. Obviously it's down to personal preferences but if I had to list a few off the top of my head. I don't see how you're not impressed by rap lyricism though.

Gang Starr - Moment of Truth

Black Star - Black Star

Digable Planets - Blowout Comb

Mos Def - Black on Both Sides

A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders

Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain

Mobb Deep - The Infamous

Organized Konfusion - Stress: The Extinction Agenda

Pharoah Monche - Desire

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein

Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Taste of Rain...Why Kneel?

Westside Gunn - Flygod

The Roots - Things Fall Apart

Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Erykah Badu - Baduizum

Like the genre is so so so so so deep.

"wat"

Apparently, I just don't like fun lmao. But really, I was never much for the way Blink sounded. I really only ever fucked with Enema of the State and if I had to hear it now, I might like it less.
