I'm four songs in and geez this sounds very cookie-cutter to me. The vocals sound inoffensive to a point it's annoying to me that he needs to do these weird shuddering noises every now and then. Like, throwing in random gimmicks doesn't make up for the fact that you're not a good singer.

Most of this is a huge trudge, but the final three tracks blow every other 2020 mopey folky release I've heard out of the water

What about it is a trudge? This thing starts out epic and then becomes very nuanced and beautifully fleshed out with the orchestra. The final 3 tracks are certainly excellent, but the mid-album back to back punch of Stairwell and Persona Non Grata is quite possibly the high point for me.

Dance and Sing was a great kick-off, but everything after that up until Forced Convalescence felt like a plain mid-tempo fixation that ground the same songwriting patterns into the dirt time and again (those two tracks being a relative bright spot). This feels a little shallow tbh, but I've given it a couple of spins and got the same disengagement both times, but I'm easily invested enough in this record's best moments to give it another few shots (similar story to you and I Know The End...we'll see!)

I mistook this for that awful Dallas Green solo project and that's literally the only reason I checked it (morbid curiosity)

But yeah even I know who Connor Oberst is, he was every 16 year old scene girls wet dream when I was in high school so that's probably why I mentally associate him with shit like City and Colour and Death Cab for Cutie

I don't think I knew a single girl in middle school who listened to Bright Eyes and didn't also listen to City and Colour, it was a package deal

Ok the middle has fewer flops than I remembered, tentative bump. Mariana Trench is a gem

Mariana Trench's ending is phenomenal. It starts out like a 3.5 kinda track but then takes off.
