agreed. works well as an experience or kind of short story in music form, but I don't imagine I'll be coming back to this years later the same way I have with the Glow pt2 or No Flashlight or It Was Hot... or most other Phil releases that I've heard tbh. I'd love to be wrong though.

The more I listen to this the more I think it's a nothing album. The first 6 minutes alone is just the same thing over and over and over again. I think there are beautiful moments on here and I do enjoy some of the lyrics and concept but liatening to this for 44 straight minutes feels like a bit of a chore

It doesn’t really have an awful lot of replay value but that has no impact on how I feel about it. There are other albums for that

I'm a bit torn because I do get that perspective. Some of my favourite games and movies are ones I don't feel the need to revisit for long stretches of time, but it's never been that way for music. It was an interesting listen but even then a 5 seems crazy generous

I dunno, I listened to this four times yesterday and it got better each time. I'm getting to the point where I can feel when certain moments are about to happen before they do. But I also don't think replayability is a strong criterion on which something's quality should rely.

I mean, timelessness and replay value are often cited as traits of some of the all time greats, no? It's not a prerequisite, of course, but very few (read: none) of my favourite albums are those that I played a handful of times, loved and then never returned to.

Will certainly keep jamming this and see how it holds up, regardless.

Some of the best "art" is so because it does something unforeseen or unorthodox, which typically doesn't lend itself to "replayability" because more often than not that goes hand-in-hand with accessibility. I don't think this does anything crazy or overly experimental, but the length and repetition makes it a tough thing to tackle frequently. Doesn't diminish what it is, just means I won't often hear it because I can't skip to my favorite tracks, thus it is more likely to fall out of rotation. But when I have a free 45 minutes and am in the mood for some lo fi folk, this is up there with the best.

This thread is an abomination. This isn't just an album it's a multi media photo essay and if you didn't watch the video reading along with the lyrics then you are fucking up big time. All this navel gazing circle jerk about aesthetics is so far beyond the point. The man splayed open his guts and fanned them on the table to give us an incredibly personal meditation on the phenomenology of time and our futile attempts to grasp ourselves and meaning as an individual merely coasting through the cosmic reverie of past into present each moment and self ever changing. And you guys are whining about album titles. Replay value? Replay value??? What replay value does a Caravaggio hold, what replay value do your own memories hold. Ridiculous

Lol what an asinine comment. I already said something doesn't need heavy replay value to sit with you forever or to be something you reflect upon, I just think it's rarer for music to achieve than other mediums. I really struggle to think of an album I connected with on a deep level that I didn't feel compelled to revisit. Actually drawing a complete blank here.

I was just poking fun at how adamantly you defended him right off the bat. Replayability is definitely not the main takeaway from this. I enjoyed the themes of time, how we transform in some respects while remaining the same in others, how change is infinite, and the burden it places on us in the present to try to understand it all. I watched the video with the photo collage, but I still enjoy this plenty without the visual component (although that adds to it).

The ironic part is I'm not even a fanboy. I just remember liking Glow pt 2 back in the mid 00s sputcore days and decided to give this a go. Hit me like a truck. Maybe that's part of why the others seem idk is disappointed the word? Can't be bothered to read all their posts but I could see why die hard fans may have had some expectations for something different after all this time or feel like this is rehashed material but I don't have any of that baggage.

I also suspect this skews with age

No, no it's more just that 45 min songs are huge investments - esp one with as little replay value as this. There are great moments here, I liked it a fair bit my first time but it has diminishing returns. Upon revisiting it's also just way too samey for far too long

You remind me of film bros that still haven't gotten over the 'plot' hurdle. That is where I spend a lot of my time, screening art house, foreign, avant garde films and I have to deal with a lot of pushback from people who worship Tarantino and can't get find value beyond traditional narrative. So that's where I'm coming from to be honest.

It doesn't help that I've seen you around the site and seem more interested in giving controversial hot takes than seriously engaging with materials

is tarantino the new michael bay of filmmaking or something? i definitely get the 'plot', pretty plain to see tbh, i'm just not as invested in it as others. this and crow serve more like an audiobook than an album proper

not surprised; most people who don't just blindly go along with the general consensus are perceived as contrarians on sputnik.
