'I like this but controversially prefer almost all other pre Sound Dust Stereolab to this'
Nah, this ain't controversial, especially if the 'almost' refers to Mars (which I do think is weaker). I could also see this overtaking Emperor mind.

It did for me! This is one of their best.

I will need to revisit it again but I'd probably put it before Peng! and Mars right now

this is miles better than either of those records and leaves ETK in the dust too. can see a case being made for Dots/Cobra/Sound-Dust but those all have such a different sound that the debate kinda loses oxygen at that point. everything good about earlier Stereolab is at its best here
now
everyone jam Super-Electric!!! their best non-album song???

Think so too Johnny. And yes yes yes Super-Electric for best non-album song (and there are MANY non-album songs...!).

Agreed. Was delighted when they played it live a few months back.

This has undoubtedly been the most impenetrable recording on my Stereolab journey but I feel I'm on the cusp of bumping to 4.

This is equal parts a perfect noise pop record and a perfect concept record about records and listening to records and making recorded music, and the more listens it soaks up the better those two sides sit together. Comes so close to being too smart for its own good, but is just too personable to get bogged down in that. Love a load of other Stereolab, but nothing else they've done has the same scope as this

Definitely gets enhanced with repeated listens. Jenny Ondioline is hard-on material.

I like this but the other 2 I’ve heard are more my thing
Band is at their best the less rock they are imo

true with regard to most of Mars Audiac and the majority of the rock songs on ETK
clearly untrue in that Crest, Surrealchemist and Super-Electric make up 30% of their top 10

agreed with Ars…
I mean this is v good and I can see it being more of a vibe for others, I just don’t usually want a sound such as this when I envisage sitting down with some Stereolab. So although I do enjoy this, it seems unlikely I’ll be revisiting often at this stage.

Pack and I’m Going are my big take aways on this one

that surprises me when the opener is everything worth borrowing from TVU's sound in one concentrated package

“Worth borrowing” okay
Tbh I don’t care much for Tone Burst, song does not play to Laetitia’s strengths at all though I guess she is kinda Nico-ing it on that one 🤷‍♂️
