My rating isn't set in stone too. I still wait for Canary Yellow, The Strain and Carousel to full click.

Album is quite interesting

I think I listened to The Mountain once a long time ago and wasn't moved at all. I'll give this a go.

Both albums aren't their best imo. Try Vector for heavy and concise stuff and Visions for melodic and symphonic prog

I can't ignore how silly the lyrics are here, and while the music is fine it still doesn't do much for me. And then there's this: I don't enjoy any of the vocal stuff.

None of the singles impressed me very much. Curious to see if Messiah Complex is as good as people say it is.

Relistened some of Visions today, good stuff, better than I remember

I'm digging this. It will probably settle in as one of their best albums for me after the smoke clears. My 3.5 certainly isn't going to stand either.
EDIT: Bumped up to a 4

^^ Did the same thing with The Mountain the other day and i felt that quite a bit, i must say. It's certainly not as sterile as some people make it out to be while the production might make it look like that on a surface level.
Band is embracing more rhythmic inspired prog with less focus on harmonic development and emphasis on the guitars these days. They are far from getting Leprous'd, but they are shifting into this direction and it suits their style imo.

Haken really are the concensus band of modern prog imo. Not the best or most original band there, but one most fans of the genre can agree on.

Agree with that, feel like the Periphery/SikTh etc. fans like Haken as well as those that like DT, Opeth etc

They kinda blend all of the aspects together pretty seamlessly

Messiah Complex is amazing, Invasion is really good, rest of the album is forgettable.

I think this is Haken's best album. They've managed to take ideas from older albums and elevate them to new heights.
No weak tracks either. Favourites are Messiah Complex, Canary Yellow and Invasion.

I think I liked this, but I haven't really felt like listening to it again. Maybe it's a grower tho so I will.
Probably.

This is the problem, I think. The whole modern prog sound doesn't do much to excite me, at least not at face value

Same for me. I'd be lying to you guys if I said I'm a big fan of modern prog rock and metal bands.

I love me some good modern prog, but much of it is quite processed and overly clean. That gets annoying after a few albums.
Love me some Leprous and Caligula's Horse and BTBAM though. Getting into Protest The Hero as well. Good stuff. I guess it's hard to pin down what that modern prog style actually is though. Maybe it's more of a production kind of thing?

This band's best song is still Falling Back To Earth, change my mind.
