I remember reading this review in 2020 thinking that this new country artist would get big. I didn’t think that is what he wanted so I have been kinda shocked by how huge he got in the last three years.

I'm surprised too. He always prided himself on avoiding mainstream success and the radio. Maybe he finally decided he needs to make some money or something haha.

Given how little the new album does to capitalize on his commercial success, I'm kind of inclined to think he didn't seek it out

True. New one is very bland and withdrawn.

I don't know if I'd call it bland; the songwriting/instrumentation/production approaches on display often feel quite different from what landed him charting singles

I liked him both before and during his fame; new one just feels extremely by-the-numbers for him and lacks the emotional punch that even his most mainstream sounding hits have delivered in copious amounts.

Giving this a spin now and right off the bat I'm digging it more than his later stuff. Although I don't really like the fact that he pulled two songs from this album stream. Not that it matters what I think, but still.

I liked this a lot! Although trying to retcon this album by removing two of its best songs from streaming platforms doesn't make any sense to me.

It had something to do with a bitter breakup or something and him not wanting the songs to be heard anymore

American Heartbreak is another you should listen to if you liked this. These two are probably his very best albums.

Yee I think you're right, I was reading a bit about it. Anita was definitely a heart-wrenching song, and I could see why you wouldn't want to be reminded about a failed marriage, but also, they're already out there.
I digress though, and I'll give American Heartbreak a spin when I have the time.

Yeah I also wish he would have left the songs up, I think all art is a representation of a point in time which does not necessarily need revision.
American Heartbreak is probably my favorite ZB release ever, it's just the total package in terms of what his music can deliver. That said Elisabeth is a gem, and was my first ZB, so it will always hold a special place.

S/T is probably his best, followed by Bar Scene

I could never get into S/T for some reason, although there's definitely a handful of people who swear by it. Between those two I vastly prefer Bar Scene, although IMO both pale in comparison to Elisabeth and American Heartbreak.

I think he's been better with the full band vibe overall, but this one is cool too.

I agree I think I prefer the full band
