this is no 1 and no 5 for me but I can see that there are valid reasons to rate this at both sides of the spectrum. I think lyrically this is better than dear youth and the subject matter was clear before this was even released, I mean you can't really blame them for trying to cope with that whole situation through their lyrics. On the other side it gets kind of a one-trick pony and some lines are still cheesy.
From a songwriting perspective however, I find this to be much more precise than dear youth which is basically a hot mess with the occasional banger here and there. The clean vocals do work in some places but not at every instance. I think in the end this will settle between a 3.5 and a 4 for me. They'll never top fury though.

Apparently their drummer made ablist comments to the singer of Culture Abuse because of his Cerebral Palsey. If true, that is pretty shitty.

the car accident did more for this band's popularity than their music ever did.
it's cool that they came back (minus all the shit that is now coming to light about them) and the story is """inspiring""" but this sucks lol.

Fury is so much better than everything they've done since. Returners was good and I like a handful of songs on GWYG, but Dear Youth was so boring. I need more time with this one, but it sounds like a step in the right direction.

i think about half of Returners is really good, i dont listen to the rest. i mostly fuck with Fury.

First half of Returners is def way stronger than the back half for me. I think they lost some style when they lost their old drummer. He was dope.

Andrew is such a good drummer too though. I've always loved his little fills. Even in the simple intro of this album

couple of fun songs but as a whole: ehhh. The Currents new album blows this one out of the water.

I mean, back in 2014 they were headlining sold out shows in Australia in some pretty sizeable venues, but stick to whatever narrative you would like.
'couple of fun songs but as a whole: ehhh. The Currents new album blows this one out of the water.'
Currents album is a nice listen, but the heavy parts and melodies on TGI are far stronger. A few songs on The Way It Ends feel a bit unfinished too, like they didn't quite flesh everything out.
'Its been a bad week for this band lol'
I'm not a fan of their decision to sack Jim. But let's also not forget that they just released their first album in 6 years, will probably get record sales, have had nothing but critical acclaim for this record, and would have had a totally normal week had cancel culture not reared in hypocritical head.
