The Pitchfork review is interesting, but I think a lot of the lyrics are cherry-picked. They fit a lot better in the context of the songs. Sure the themes haven't changed, but the review makes it sound like every line is about being fucked up, when that's just not the case. Fair enough if you want them to grow up a little bit more, but I agree with lucazade in that just focusing on those lines kind of does a discredit to the album as a whole

My problem with the lyrics is theyre doing here what they already did better on ATP. Can we move on from this "back then" bullshit now? It feels redundant and forced.

Barnett wants to rekindle a relationship on “Portland”

ian cohen has trouble telling them apart sometimes too!

ian cohen's review includes the word 'aforementioned' so it must be good and correct

right as opposed to this review which uses the word "triumphalism" in the first sentence.

the lyrics are way more interesting to critique on this album because the music is just mid-tempo and dull. Not much Fantano-style adjectiving you can really do about it

to clarify I don't have any problem with using 3+ syllable words in a review, I just thought it was funny that he complained that Cohen used "aforementioned" when the review he's commenting on isn't exactly layman's terms.

So after a few spins I'd echo a few of the sentiments I've been reading on the thread

This is not their best and is held back by the production and being a bit one tempo. The clean sound of After the Party worked far better for me given that they've ditched most of the punk sound and started writing more arena sized rock songs

But there are some really good songs here too. Anna and London Drugs are super catchy, America is a good opener and Strain Your Memory might be the best track

Does anyone almost always find Tom's tracks to be the weakest on each album?

I've grown to almost skip almost all of the songs where he sings because he absolutely pales in comparison to Greg.

yeah, I noticed that all of my least favorite tracks on this and ATP are Tom songs.

HARD NO. i dont have that experience with any menzies album. all the tom songs on ATP are really strong, particularly thick as thieves. im actually starting to get alk3 vibes from this band where one guy is the more dominant songwriter but i wanna hear like a 50/50 split with the other guy.

and y'know, burn after writing and freedom bridge are top 10 songs for sure.

I am getting alk3 vibes too. House on fire is superb. I also think Portland is one of the better tracks on here

"I just thought it was funny that he complained that Cohen used "aforementioned" "

it mostly reminded me of my own (uni related) writing, i'll always sneak in semi-interesting CoMpLeX words on any papers i write in hopes of sounding smart lmao

reeeeally love the title track. somehow the slower songs really fit well with the album art. makes me think of weekend cabin trips in michigan's upper peninsula in the 90s

Nothing as strong as Casey, Deep Sleep, Lookers, or Your Wild Years ..... and the production is muddled. But this is VERY consistant. Overall ranks quite high for me. Enjoying it a lot.
