I feel like the thing to mind is not "near" itself, nor "sugar" nor "project 2" necessarily, but the fact that those are tracks 6, 7, and 9, with the silly "bad man" being 8. I feel like Alex G has a spiky, funny personality and wants to toy with structure in a potentially alienating way (the middle of Rocket is pretty wonky too, albeit not as blatantly as here). idk tho

i've said this before but this reminds me of the the stuff i used to listen to when i first came to sputnik, all the 90s/early 2000s indie "classics" - i rarely listen to those albums nowadays but this is a like a direct line to my memories and emotions of those days and it's dope
