Har har. They played a few tracks from this album, a couple songs I didn't recognize, then Greg Massi joined them for Gemini Becoming the Tripod. They closed with Passing the River.
Sound mix was bad. I couldn't hear Toby's vocals at all except when it was quiet. They had two drummers, which only exacerbated the problem. Toby played bass on only two songs. Otherwise he was playing guitar, or synth. So, majority of the concert was two guitars and two drummers with a bad sound mix. Most enjoyable moment was the two older songs. It would have been so much better if the sound guy didn't suck.

So many bands have bad sound mixing at concerts. Never understood why.

when I went to their show the mixing was sub par at best. he stopped halfway through mortality of doves, and restarted the song. granted, it was sick as could be to see them play that.

Yeah, at the Hong Kong. My gf came with me, and she kept asking me why they didn't play a better venue. That's a good question. I think Kayo Dot has earned a better venue than the freaking Hong Kong. The two drummers thing made no sense to me. I wasn't sure what value it was adding to the music that one drummer with a larger kit could do. They also switched seats twice in the show. Not sure why haha
When they played Gemini and Passing the River the drummers were super into it. Not so much for the rest of the show. I think they were touring drummers. Normally they would have had that dude from Time of Orchids.

I've heard tell that Phobos is their best. Can anyone speak to this opinion?

@FadedSun That’s something only Toby would know as far as why he feels the new music required duo drummers. I saw them live on Friday and don’t have much to complain about the drummer thing. I thought it was kinda cool to watch actually. Then again, look at King Crimson with their three drummer lineup currently.

| |
^ Definitely. It was fun to watch, and I liked the idea, just that the sound quality of the venue wasn't supportive of having two drummers. I checked the personnel on this album, and I also didn't realize the recording featured these two drummers. I thought it was a live set up with touring drummers.

I have to say, the third track is kinda mediocre. And the fourth isn't that strong either, although I guess it's fitting for a long uneventful journey.

best track is An Eye for a Lie. amazing song, everything else here doesn't compare imho. if every song was set in the world of that track, I'd be happy.

"I feel the opposite haha, An Eye For a Lie is probably the band’s worst song"
Idk to me sounded way cooler and way more atmospheric than the other tracks. Kinda gave me Underworld vibes.

Agreed on Eye For a Lie possibly being the worst thing ever to come out under KD's name. Jammed this again earlier and considering dropping - the good bits are ace but it's just awkwardly inconsistent

hm well i think waiting for KD to go electronic but yeah if the whole album had tracks like that, my rating would be considerably higher.

With this, PHOBOS and Coffins, I've had enough of synthDot for now. I want Toby to assemble the metal team back. I'm missing the horn/wind sections, too. Mia is probably never coming back. I'd like to see her pop in for some kind of reunion show though.
