"everyone's gonna pretend she proved herself as a songwriter on sling, when that already happened on this album. it's pretty great but I expect to return to this more"
agreed
It's ok, it's not bad, but there's a chunk of the record I will never really go back to. Songs like Amoeba, when she gets a bit more Natalie Prass, is when it really hits. But I feel nothing for tracks like the closer, Wade, Harbor, etc when Sufjan released (the brilliant) Michigan 20 years ago and we've somehow tracked further back to totally harmless, unambitious twee orchestral arrangements. That aesthetic is practically a brand nowadays - I can see the algorithm-generated "coffee shop autumnal indie" playlists being created - and I find it so boring.

and Wade, Harbor, and Management are all some of my faves on first listen. especially Habor, that and Amoeba are probably my top 2

State faults - clairovoyance
am most of the way through this new album and it might be the most boring thing I've heard all year ngl. am struggling to flesh out an opinion beyond that but tbqh i don't think it's happening. antonoff is playing wurlitzers again?

Listened to her new album twice now and it’s pretty incredible. I can’t imagine giving it a 2.5. It’s fairly unpredictable and interesting, really pretty production and textures all throughout, good variety, lots of instruments that work well together, yet not overly busy and plenty of breathing room. Really surprised at how great it is. Some gorgeous tracks here.

thinking Amoeba is her best song now
|
| |
amoeba is def the best track but reminds me a bit too much of son of sam. the elliott smith worship is real

and i'm very cool with that
3-4 listens now, a bit too sparse at parts but always pleasant. even blouse has grown on me. Amoeba is def one of my favorite 2021 tracks, i'm obsessed with it

I’m barely seeing Elliott smith worship here

way more staying power than sling, didn't return to that one after release week

Have to agree with luci. I know I raved about the new one -- and it's still decent especially when I'm listening to it -- but this thing has way more staying power. The songwriting here is quite simply better whereas the new one relies too much on atmosphere.
