I was completely unimpressed with this until "Army" came along and made my jaw drop
Will need to give this album more time

Damn really
Like I know Army is incredible but the whole album is jaw dropping
If you like Simon & Garfunkel, Tigers on Trains, or any similar folk act I don't see how you couldn't like this
Same goes for if you enjoy MO

Lake House and Army are the standouts for me.
But yeah; I was never really that much into Bad Books, but this is a major step up.
Great songs, great arrangements.
Can't stop listening to it.

Sowing I was surprised too, since I do enjoy Grandfather and Black Mile to a 3.5 level (though I prefer MO's first three albums, which all rate 4+ for me)
Ashamed to say I've never given Simon & Garfunkel enough time or love - only know a select few songs and I've been meaning to fix that for eons.
I think the problem for me on first listen was I didn't like Devine's voice except for a few moments, and the Hull songs until "Army" felt like weaker versions of what could have been found on Black Mile. Last two songs definitely elevated this album for me and made me second-guess what could have otherwise turned out to be a hasty 2 or 2.5.

Only one full listen and I would peg this at about a 3.5 — but I can definitely see it growing to a 4. I somehow doubt it’ll go higher though simply because I’m not into this type of folky rock. But it’s good regardless.
Army is fucking amazing though OMG. You guys weren’t lying. Wheel Well, UFO, Lake House And Supposed to Be Are good too. Rest is somewhat forgettable to me, but hey, it’s only one listen, which is why I haven’t given it my official rating yet.

Lake House is daaaamn good

Both I guess, didn't realize there were two vocalists until I posted that comment (shows how deeply I was listening)

Army is just incredible. Can’t stop listening to it (in lieu of the rest of the album lol).
One of Hull’s very best, with or without MO. Probably top 5 for realz though.

Returning to this now and to finally say that this is an amazing review.

Yeah this has clicked hard. My top ten of the year is gonna be completely dominated by folk/acoustic albums at this rate. Incredible record.

This is very good, but it will never be as good as Black Mile to the Surface.

Yeah Black Mile is better
The albums aren't really comparable though IMO outside of sharing a vocalist

they're both emotionally weighty and the subject of fatherhood comes up on each so I could see that being an additional point of comparison but yeah

Album Rating: 3.5
They’re somewhat comparable but yeah, Black Mile is generally more “rock-y”, livelier and varied than this. This is damn good though!

Havn't been compelled to revisit this yet, but I should soon

Bought tix to see these guys in LA on August 18. Has anyone gone to see these guys this tour? I just figured an intimate show with Andy Hull should be a night to remember. Especially for $30.

This grew a fair bit on 2nd listen, still don't like track 5 at all though

Album Rating: 3.9 | Sound Off
that one's a bit of a mess yeah. think my rating has basically settled for this
Wheel Well - 5/5
Army - 5/5
Lake House - 5/5
I Wrote It Down For You - 4.5/5
Supposed to Be - 4.5/5
Left Your Body - 4/5
UFO - 4/5
Myths Made Plain - 3.5/5
I Love You etc - 2.5/5
Neighborhood - 2/5
still a frustratingly inconsistent album, but goddamn the highs are high

I love you, please help me was the first song I heard off of this, and put a hella bitter taste in my mouth. Awful song.
Rest is good to great, still kinda basic background-musicy to me tho. It’s not really technical enough or with enough finger style to justify the Simon Garfunkel comparisons.

I love you isn’t awful but it’s certainly the poppiest song here. It has a decent melody, though it is one of my least favs here. I can imagine getting it stuck in your head (apt to happen with a catchy song) could be quite annoying though.
There are no awful songs here. There are mediocre, good and excellent songs here.
For my money Army (GOAT), Wheel Well And Lake House re the 4.5-5s. Supposed to be and UFO are good too.
