Something I’m noticing as I revisit past albums: this probably has Brian’s most dynamic vocal performance. On Carnavas and Swoon he mainly does the hushed to yelling thing, and then on NotW and BN he sticks with the airy, hushed vocals. He’s less formulaic on this one and I dig it.

I think they could make good music again if they expanded on their best moments. They’re not beyond hope; they’re just no longer trying. Neon Wound here is great and has tons of energy. Cradle (Better Nature) from the previous album is probably my favorite song from them. But they have got to stop writing albums with only one or two good songs and cramming the rest with snoozers. I can count on one hand (without using my thumb) the amount of good songs between this album and the last one. At least the best two from the last are the first two tracks and the third of the four is the opener of this one. At least they know where to put them before losing our interest completely.
