“Where Is Her Head” has not been a highlight for me on first couple spins

That's one of the good ones here Flag yes

Totally different for them, worthwhile, like it a lot

I do quite like the stretch from 'Where is Her Head' to 'So Far So Fast' - that's as good a run as I've found here

Yeah "Not In Kansas" is gorgeous. I love "Where Is Her Head" just for the juxtaposition, but it's also really great on its own.

“Not In Kansas” is the “Leaving LA” of this album surely?

'Not in Kansas', despite the lullaby style female sections, is the only moment Matt sounds awake to me.

Maybe he's most proud of those lyrics? Elsewhere very few lines are jumping out...and Matt really isn't pushing them.

The reaction to this reminds me of the Vampire Weekend album a little bit... I think people are kind of coming to the realization that their 00s indie faves are getting old don't sound quite as vital anymore.

I still like this record so far but I don't there's a single old guard indie band that I expect classic albums from anymore.

Sort of.

Think the Independent's review got it:

'I Am Easy to Find feels like an old friend you’re pleased to keep around--even if, had you been introduced today, you wonder if you’d have been compelled to make the effort.'

I wouldn't have got into this band through this album.

Yeah this isn't anything classic, but I'll take an album full of beautiful National songs any day. The only song I'd remove is Dust Swirls... because wtf

Not in Kansas doesn’t have a lot of staying power, some good lyrics but it gets tiresome pretty quickly since it’s just two sections alternating over and over for almost 7 minutes. Where is Her Head is like them attempting early Arcade Fire and it came out pretty good. One of the few energetic moments on the album. Dust Swirls gets really good after the one minute mark.

I really like Quiet Light but it just occurred to me that from a songwriting standpoint it's basically a Dangerous Summer song with National instrumentation lmao

I really can't detect much top tier song writing on this thing at all - as we're showing the 'highlights' unravel pretty quick taken in isolation. The sad conclusion being the context of being surrounded by even less interesting material does them a favour and makes them stand out more than they would otherwise.

Too much revisiting. Too much ho hum. Too much awkward embellishment. Too laboured over.

Yeah this is great, will take more listens to properly sink in though. Can't wait to see them.

Wait did people not like the lyrics on SWB? I thought they were way better than TWFM.

I got into this band a year ago (ish) & hardly listen to indie anymore, the little that I do still occasionally revisit is likely due to nostalgia. It doesn't sound like much of a compliment, but the fact I'm bothered enough about this band to check out a new release on day 1 is actually extraordinary, given my present music listening tendencies.

Listening to 'Alligator' now.

The 'water in my head' chorus of 'Karen' if transplanted to this album would be the best thing here. Sigh.

"old enough for those who long ago dismissed their gray palettes and Matt Berninger’s navel-gazing to wave away yet another release about distances and quiet tragedies"

can confirm, lol. excellent review klap! might actually check this since there's not much else released today
