Also trying this whole album again, and it's most definitely growing on me. Some surprisingly BIG sounding moments for an indie folk album

Dimsim ngl just like many albums I didn't have to even read your entire last post to know i didnt like it
|

Jk but for real it's the same rehashed points and you keep bringing up "duration" like an hour is such a trudge, which brings me back to movies, usually longer, also not needing dozens of views to form an opinion on

lol. every debate ends out of my exhaustion with those paragraphs.

I'll give you one thing: if you were to write a comprehensive review on something you listened to once and hated, you probably wouldnt offer much depth. But that's not what we are talking about. We are simply talking about the ability to distinguish between things that we do and do not like and what we have potential to like more. And your opinion on that matter sucks.

Honestly, I get Pots comment about knowing your own taste and having a solid idea about what you will end up loving or hating. Personally, if I really dislike something on first listen (and the corresponding reviews are overly negative) it's immediately trashed. If I dislike something where the reviews are overly positive (like Lateralus) I'll listen 3-4 times to see if it clicks. If I like something on first listen, even if a little, I'll see if it grows with further listens.

i get doof's "bud of intrigue" concept. like when i first started listening to The National, the first time i checked them out i didnt really get it, but there was something that kept me coming back even though i didnt take to it at first. if i dont have that "bud of intrigue" im not gonna waste my time listening to it 20 times to force my brain to adapt to it so i can finally like it. life's way too short to spend it forcing yourself to like something.

given the reviews for this album, this is obviously the kind of situation we’re talking about
We are simply talking about the ability to distinguish between things that we do and do not like and what we have potential to like more
im not questioning this ability, because we all utilise it to quickly sort “likes” and “dislikes” without ten hours of focused attention on every thing. im merely suggesting that for many people, it can sometimes be worthwhile to not immediately ditch generally well reviewed or well liked (or, purely theoretically, any kind of) albums if they dont click right away. as lucman brought up their experience with lateralus, i had an experience with haru to shura last year where i felt the same amount of dislike for it as i did with some of my 2’s, and i still felt that way after at least 5 spins. but later on it clicked and i did a 180. maybe im just not as experienced as you and dont have a deep enuf taste in japanese pop rap (despite having heard plenty) to form any kind of opinion after one listen, but im not convinced that everyone is able to reliably form an unchangeable opinion for every single album that comes across their table.
like an hour is such a trudge, which brings me back to movies, usually longer, also not needing dozens of views to form an opinion on
again, maybe you’re just a better listener than everyone, but i think most people can attest to feeling that they only have a cursory and not-fully-established view of most albums after one listen, and probably also the odd experience where they were unable to form any opinion of an album, or they came to a basic opinion that later changed; it’s possible, even for experienced listeners. the other piece of evidence that albums are disanalogous with movies is that people listen to the same albums way more than they watch the same movies; obviously movies do something in their duration that makes revisits less necessary than with albums.

lol. every debate ends out of my exhaustion with those paragraphs.
clarity, yo. but in this case, i’ve written more than this very niche idea warrants. there are few situations where something doesnt immediately have any mild resonance with you AND you’ll have some reason to expend a lotta time revisiting it anyway. just sayin occasionally, maybe people should, but most don’t.
the whole reason that i started this discussion was that with laura in particular, i think it can be easy to quickly write off her music because it sounds at a glance like very ordinary indie folk shit when imo theres more to it than that that cannot be gleaned after one listen. i didnt think the idea of a seemingly unremarkable album with more under the surface was so unusual. obviously thats not going to be true for every album and every person, but i just think it might be for some. people can do what they want with that suggestion; most will ignore it, but i dont know why its so contentious to offer it.
ugh paragraphs ok i promise i’ll stop now
