Ok that Darkwater album slaps. It's not quite as "hard rock riffy" as this though

Yea bloc glad you checked it out. I've been trying to tell people about it. Yea I was thinking myself that was one of the biggest distinctions between these two albums. Dream Theater has more of that hard rock "riffiness" going on. I just think it's funny everyone goes crazy over Dream Theater and a prog album in a similar vein that is just as good comes out a week later and it's ignored. Just another obscure band is all. And that's the nature of the music business I suppose. Dream Theater is like "THE" prog band.

On the other hand, if an unknown band put out an album this good people who knew about it would be raving about how it's a banger with a capital B rather than just a good album by Dream Theater.

Darkwater is a bit more like Thresholds than DT; much more subdued but prog metal nonetheless

@bloc and Dmax

Yeah Darkwater is less technical and I guess less energetic than Dream Theater. Obviously they're not nearly as influential and I totally understand why a new Dream Theater album would get lots more attention. At the same time though, Darkwater being more song oriented and more melodious with a truly amazing singer, you can't help but feel Darkwater should be huge right now if more people gave them a listen. They'd crack my top 20 list of metal bands to show non-metal fans, that's how accessible their songs are. Dream Theater would probably make the list too, but I'd have to go back to Images and Words to find something more immediate.

Yes! Very well put. If I wanted to introduce prog to a friend who isn't big on metal, I'd show them Darkwater.

I haven't liked anything they have done since Train of Thought. It's sad cause they used to be one of my favorite Bands but they just seem stuck in a paint by numbers Prog/Metal corporate machine pumping out boring and uninspired albums every 2 years. Portnoy was right that the Band REALLY needed to take a break and collect themselves.

This album is not horrible but it is so milk toast and boring that it is just not worth the time

Fall Into the Light is my favorite DT song since A Nightmare to Remember, which itself was a standout in post-Six Degrees songs.
