see, I like the cheese, it's when they take themselves way too seriously this starts to unravel for me...

if their pretensions weren't insufferable i'd prob give this a 3
i enjoy love it if we made it, it's not living and the closer

Yeah... I was giving this a 3 earlier. It was a 2.5, but I figured I’d bump it a little because of the ambition, but I found out Matt told NME a year and a half before release that he wanted the 3rd album to be like OK Computer or The Queen is Dead, and once I saw that I thought they were more pretentious then ambitious and lowered my rating. I may be late to the party in that regard, but I’ve never followed these guys close. I’ve enjoyed their tunes like guilty pleasures over the years though. And Love It If We Made It is still one of my favs of the year.

The more this band talk up their latest release the more you start looking back and thinking maybe Everything Everything didn't actually fall that far from dropping the Ok Computer of this decade

I tried listening to 1975's other albums and never got into them.
This is the first time I actually liked their music, and I agree 100% with Sowing (1st paragraph is perfect imo).

'but I found out Matt told NME a year and a half before release that he wanted the 3rd album to be like OK Computer or The Queen is Dead'
I already mentioned this... it makes the review completely redundant to me, oh actually it's NME so it's redundant anyway. Never mind.

Nice new avatar Sowing. I'll give this another try and pay more attention, but when I tried first spin it came and went without leaving much impact.

"It might be the worst mainstream release of the year which isn’t bad going when you consider ‘Dirty Computer’ and the new Muse also came out."
Dirty Computer is a hard 5 but okay

Dirty Computer and this are two very similar albums in that they're the two biggest disappointments of the year by a country mile

Sincerity is Scary is an alright song, at least instrumentally. I feel like I need to say something nice & that's the best I've got so far.

I've got a dilemma... despite the fact some of this actively irritating, that I don't enjoy the vocal style or the awful synthetic-sounding vocal effects, that the lyrics are bordering on offensive to anyone who isn't either 15 (or severely lacking in awareness)... in addition we have major publications claiming this is the OKC of the current generation & a front-man who's so shockingly arrogant & unaware of himself that he comes across as a giant douche...
I still can't likely give this a 1/5, we'll see.
P.S This is an awful mess of a comment reading it back, ah well.

Just give it a 1 and move on
The 1
And move on
It’s easy if you try, mastered it years ago

I've made a spectacular argument (to myself) reading that back but I couldn't quite 1/5 in good conscious on the first go as a couple of the tracks seem ok & maybe I'm letting the 'douche/NME' etc. aspect influence my decision making process... so like the masochist I am, this requires a closer inspection.

This album is so dumb and I love it.

A couple of full listens, no song you’d return to for pleasure? Whack up a 1, that’s your honest subjective entertainment rating - a truly honest rating.
Anything else can only be more disingenuous

But that’s the code I work to anyway

I don't return to entire albums of 2.5 material though, it doesn't mean they're irredeemably bad & my rating is disingenuous, just that I find it easy enough to find 3+ albums instead & the fact there are tons likely in that range (which I am yet to hear) means returning to odd songs from inferior albums seems futile.
You can also get a modicum of enjoyment 'in the moment' but it doesn't necessarily warrant repeated listening.
