Had the potential to be better than Master of Puppets, but unfortunately the death of Cliff Burton meant that there was one less creative mind in the group(no offense to Newsted). James and Lars produced this album and for the most part did a terrible job. Guitars are too thin and they buzz, the drums are clicky and there is no bass whatsoever. Some of the songs go on for too long, but there is a substantial amount of good material here and the technicality of this album is very impressive along w/ the lyrics being very strong and emotional. Metallica's last great album.

I really don't know about this album. On the one hand there are some superb riffs and sequences and songs. On the other hand some of it feels bland and dry, their previous albums even Kill 'em All had great energy and was really concise, this is I don't know, its just I'm not feelin' it much.

I want to kick their ass for releasing this kind of crap. Also, the drumming isn't unusual good, it's unusual overrated.

Nah, album is boring beside some cool tracks. Track length kills this.

That I can agree with. Each song could have trimmed by at least a minute (save the instrumental, I enjoy that the whole way through).

I can't believe anyone who is seriously into metal giving this masterpiece a low rating. Some complaining the songs are too long! Go back to the creators of metal, 70's Black Sabbath, they have some awesome 6-10 min tracks. I do enjoy short tracks by the way (Napalm Death, Converge, Slayer). With regard to prog/post/epic, open your minds and get some patience. Light/shade, diversity, meloncholy, ambience and soundscape make for some of the best music. If you can't handle long tracks then you're depriving yourself of the following for example: Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Opeth, Neurosis, Isis, Cult of Luna, Porcupine Tree, Tool, Karnivool and so much more. And Justice For All is brilliant. Hetfield produced the most mature lyrics and intense outpouring of emotion. The intro to Blackened, the epic/prog of the title track and To Live is to Die, the build up of One, the solo in Eye of the Beholder, the thrash of Shortest Straw and ferocity of Dyers Eve.

I think the track lengths are okay. My beef with this is the fact that the bass is completely inaudible.

It's metal, bass is not required

When it sounds empty without it, bass is required.
