This band is so epic. It's like having DIO went prog
It's more complicated of course, but that's the vibe I get

And if their guitarist was a neoclassical geek.
I am desperate for their vinyl represses can they hurry up already.

I guess I have no idea what neo classical means haha
But true, the guitars are doing thing very differently from DIO of course

This video neatly shows how much classical influence their older material has: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGT6MKrDJy4

Yeah, the neoclassical influences were extremely prominent on these early records. Hell, the chant at the beginning of Divine Wings' t/t was even adapted from Bach's Mass in B Minor... and then the band go into an adaptation of Mars the Bringer of War right after that!
Speaking of which: if anyone ever tries to tell me Russell Allen isn't one of the best vocalists of all time, all I need to do is point them to that intro. The dude literally sang an entire gregorian-style chant by himself by overdubbing his parts... absolutely insane stuff

This isn't my favorite X, but conceptually (story-wise and album flow-wise) it is probably their strongest effort. Everything here is remarkably consistent and tied together.
"Communion and the Oracle" is undoubtedly one of their finest tracks.

How they were able to be consistently in top form from Divine Wings on is nothing short of commendable.

Definitely one of their best openers, yeah
|

The album is too good to be real tbh
Also I love how me/Koris/Mars/Kalk will bump Symphony X threads all day hell yeah.

Lmao we have a dedicated Symphony X bump party, it's a beautiful thing.
Now I kinda wanna pick everyone's brain in said party about what your album rankings would be...

Ummmmmm
Twilight>V>Divine>Odyssey but all are very close for me, just...divine (pardon the pun). Paradise Lost is also worthy of such mention despite it losing the fantasy sound I love so much. If Damnation was amazing all the way through it would be just below Odyssey. So:
Twilight>V>Divine>Odyssey>Paradise>Damnation>>Iconoclast>>Underworld
Never heard the s/t.

Alright, here we go:
1. Divine Wings of Tragedy (5.0)
2. Paradise Lost (4.5)
3. Twilight in Olympus (4.5)
4. The Odyssey (4.3)
5. V (4.0)
6. The Damnation Game (3.8)
7. Underworld (3.7)
8. Iconoclast (3.5)
9. Symphony X (3.0)
|

Deng that mighty 0.5 difference between first and second.

To be fair, I used to have Paradise Lost much lower, so it underwent a significant glowup for me over time :] But yeah, Divine Wings has never left that #1 spot for me. It's about as close to perfection that a prog metal album can get imo

I'm thinking about the specific order but Paradise might actually be my personal #1 still lol

Divine is my favorite but this comes pretty close. Also according to the averages in their discography here Twilight is underrated, like c'mon it should at least be a 4, it's top 5 in their discography.

RYM has it comfortably among their Big 5 albums, not sure what the disconnect is between here and there on that record specifically.
|
| |
Deserves the same average as Divine and V. The fact they released an album that good in only a year after Divine on a rushed schedule is insanity.

Absolutely. The stretch from Church of the Machine to Through the Looking Glass is the stuff of legends
