You are absolutely not too harsh. The exuberance is scrubbed clean from this record and the remainder is some bland pop music devoid of anything unique or defining. It’s almost like ‘Love is Dead’ is a bad premise for a band whose cornerstone is songs that are whimsical and danceable

CHVRCHES was going to go pop regardless. I just hate the way they did it.

I literally don’t get it how is this any poppier than their first two POP albums?
Slightly more mainstream, but equally pop.

What I meant is they went for a more mainstream pop direction rather that the style they were famous for. They diluted their lyrics and music to me more appealing to say the least. Mainstream pop is more straightforward than indie pop for example.

I’m aware that the lyrics on their first two records were not what would be expected from synthpop, but the melodies and vocal stylings made that easy to ignore. Lyrics have rarely been that important to me so I realize that some folks could see this new record as consistent with their others, but I find it abhorrent that I am now compelled to decipher lyrics in the absence of any good music

The lyrics here aren't consistent with their previous work. It's a breakup album. Their previous work tackled different themes, not just breakups.

this is wildly inconsistent, a third of it i'd rate a 2.5 and a third of it i'd rate a 4. the other third is pretty forgettable which is a shame. i loved their EP and first two albums so hopefully they haven't lost it completely.

I think a 3.5 is too generous. 2 max, but this is really a 1.5.

At first, I was okay with them going for a more approachable sound, but if it meant that they would lose all of the qualities that made them interesting to listen to to begin with, then this is more of an insult. Still dig some of the singles, but it's like they were chasing mainstream appeal more than pleasing their fans.

If you remove My Enemy through Miracle, this is pretty good. Nothing outstanding, minus Graffiti, but really not awful. too bad those 4 tracks are kinda borderline awful.
