Man, I was ready to hate this. Instead I got a consistent, lean slab of djent. Still, this band always seems like it's one step away from making something truly amazing. Is it unfair to be mad at them for always hovering on the cusp and never making it over?

Dan sounds amazing on this but they really need to deviate from everything being like 100-120 BPM

King sounds about 80 BPM... and that was just the 2nd song I checked.

Smile seems pretty low too. probably close to 100.
I think "Still, this band always seems like it's one step away from making something truly amazing" has been the feeling even as far back as one. They've just been circling around it.

but it's a bit of a stretch to rank this lower than Polaris. Now that album was a disappointment.[2]

I guess you can say the 100 - 120 BPM range is their comfort zone yeah,
would certainly be cool to see them branch out from that

Everything they do just feels low energy because of that

If the 11-min song wasn't such a bore, this would rate higher cuz I like pretty much every other song (barring interludes).

Djent has died for me for the most part but one of the music videos (idk how many there are) from this album came on the other day and I gotta say it was actually very impressive.

I remember the last album being boring so I went back to it after hearing this and yikes it really takes the dick compared to this one. good to see they still have quality tunes in em

Jeez. Is it just me that thinks Hexes is maybe the best thing they've ever written?

I am a huge sucker for most stuff on Polaris, but Hexes is absolutely a highlight. Probably their best song imo

Yeah "Hexes" is great. I really enjoyed "Utopia" as well.

This is easily their best since One imo.

beneath my skin has yet to grow on me but everything else jams hard
|

The biggest disappointment about this album is the length.
Early impressions have me liking this more then anything they've done. Polaris had them trying to make every song a banger and this is just them making an album with ebbs and flows and the better for it

I think that's their evolutionary plan yeah. I see the epic of One being mastered by Altered State, which they probably couldn't have taken much further. Since then its like they are trying to craft single tracks that are as captivating as those epics. A couple songs worked on Polaris. Sonder is closer.
