They're just everything I hate about the genre. I think that they're a pointless/awful wankfest and it their music bores me to tears. Same with The Zenith Passage who is almost as bad as The Faceless.

I guess just, for me, Faceless aren't very far on the wank (still one of my least favorite words for music probably) spectrum, especially considering contemporaries. But it's too each their own. They (read: Keene) ended up getting stuck up their arses in the end anyways

To be fair I've only heard Akeldama and Planetary Duality (their "best" albums) and they're both some of my least fav albums of all time. Up there with the last Cynic album.

To your point, they do embody modern technical death metal, at least at the time of Planetary's release. Whether that's a positive or negative image is of course subjective, but I do feel they captured the essence of the genre in that period. It's why so many bands tried to copy them promptly afterwards, with varying results.

I just realised they got Forest back on bass. He'd left after Fragmentary and when I first heard this I was thinking how crazy it was the replacement was this good. He left for Beyond Creation but I guess he's out of that band now

Yeah I was bummed when I saw them in 2010 because he'd just left Augury. The replacement they had was solid though. Glad he's back. I need to check the second Beyond Creation album. The Aura was really solid

Both albums are worth it. Some people prefer one over the other, it's a bit of a toss-up at times.

Who’s responsible for the album art?

It feels like a Travis Smith job.
