i actually really like the last track on this, despite being the most simplistic of the four tracks, it focused more on his strengths and less on dime-a-dozen viking metal bag of tricks to bolster the length of the track

tracks one and two really, really didn't need HUUUUGE clumsily mixed choirs and track 3 definitely didn't need second rate emperor with no riffs. at least winter was consistent. could have easily fitted in with any of the other two records.

Autumn and Winter have the better moments imo. Summer is the worst.

After listening to it a few times now, I came to this conclusion:

Spring: nothing much going on, I find this song the weakest. 3/5

Summer: I like the chorus part, some other enjoyable parts as well. 3.5/5

Autumn: this song is by far the best on this album, Top 3 of all their songs with only "beautiful death" and "sons of winter and stars" still better. 4.5/5

Winter: While slow, very melancholic and Jaris vocals are really good here. 4/5

Album rating: 3.75. Rounded up because of all the haters here. Still like their s/t the most (what a surprise) and this is equal or slightly better than Time 1. I still have high hopes for the future of this project, "The Way of the Fire" live a few years ago sounded really awesome and maybe at some point they will return to a more guitar-driven sound.

Well that's not very objective to just round the number up because of haters

all the haters here? to be honest the reception here isn't too dissimilar from practically every other discussion board. and again, i'm not sure why anyone gives a shit about average ratings and what some shitty website full of shitty people like me think.

Just had a chance to listen to this, and it's a pretty fun record. Never really listened to too much of this band, but it reminds me of old Equilibrium, and sounds to me like a very competent folk metal record. Honestly not sure how someone who likes this style would hate this? I do wish a lot of those keyboard melodies were louder in the mix, there seems to be some really cool ideas going on that get buried in the mix.

This is way less interesting and energetic than the s.t. so if you liked this definitely hop on that one asap.

tbh everyone should be rounding down, Jari's ego doesn't need the extra boost

"Okay, what sort of songs do our fans like? Beyond the Dark Sun, Winter Madness, Death and the Healing...okay 3 to 7 minute songs, great. I'll release an album with a 12 minute minimum track length."

hell, if sons of winter and stars is anything to go by, track length is not the issue. it's the fact that nothing fucking happens for 12+ minutes in these tracks, comparatively speaking.

so you think he should strictly keep the song lengths at 3 to 7 minutes, just because the fan favorites fall into that range? who cares if it's 12 minutes if they're well done. i mean, i'm not saying this is but in general that's not a very good criticism imo

No in general it's not a good criticism, but this was a moron padding out time with huge swathes of nothing to fit his "thematic view" of 4 songs for 4 seasons when he could have just condensed his ideas and released not-garbage-poopoo.

Also yes, speaking directly about Jari though he should stick to what he knows which is songs in that length that are good. A long song off of Time I being good doesn't negate all the long boring shit he has done in his career compared to shorter tracks off of the s/t and his 2 albums in Ensiferum that were jam packed with amazing material in the 4-5 minute range.

*SWOOPS IN TO ANSWER*

i think the longer shit on time i does completely negate your point (i just brought up sowas as the strongest of the tracks, but choose any of the other two main tracks and the comparison works), as well as the longer stuff on the s/t too (beautiful death, sadness and hate). he's no stranger to writing longer tracks and making them work. by all means criticise the fact that not enough happens in these tracks for their runtime, totally valid, but he doesn't need to u-turn and do a complete backtrack.

even then though, i sense an air of humor and sarcasm to your original sentiment anyway so *SWOOPS THE HELL OUT* [:

I am goofin a bit, I do like the longer songs on the s/t more than the shorter ones.

But yeah he clearly bumped his head and forgot how to make a long song work sometime between Time I and this.
