The "depth, diversity and appreciation [after] continuous listens" argument can just as easily be applied to this record as well, man. Sounds to me like you've gotten more, lyrically, out of Pure Comedy. Yes, because they're more plainly sung and more outwardly intellectual, Tillman appears to offer up more value on that front -- on the surface, anyway. I would advise a closer inspection of what Crack-Up has to offer in terms of actual song-writing substance for this reason. It doesn't jump out at you in the same way, sure, but it's most definitely in there, and it's nearly equal in magnitude.
As far as the strictly musical side of things, I don't see how Pure Comedy can possibly trump this. It doesn't even come close.

I don't think anyone's going to argue Pure Comedy is superior instrumentally, FJM has some great arrangements with lots of moving parts with a backing band/orchestra but many of his songs could be boiled down to him playing it acoustically on a guitar, that hardly touches the intricacies on this. That being said I think FJM's overall package with Pure comedy is a slam dunk, it's my AOTY at this point.

Indie folk is far too simplistic a descriptor for them, and they never really had an "indie" sound per se.
Even RYM agrees that this one isn't indie folk though.
(Beside the point, I have always found "indie folk" kind of a bullshit genre anyways but that's a different argument.)

I'd say it's more Mumford and sons in leather jackets and sat in a Seattle coffee house.

C'mon zak, approach this/them with an open mind. Their compositions, songwriting, melodies/harmonies - all wonderful.

Wow, this review does the album quite a bit of justice. Wonderfully written, as is the album. I enjoy this a lot more conceptually and lyrically than Helplessness Blues and the self-titled, even though most of it isn't as catchy or lively.
