It's just a matter of musical opinion, not how much thought is put into/how seriously you take a piece of music.

not exactly sure what you mean by this but i'm almost 100% sure i disagree

why even discuss or introduce your opinion if you can't explain why you have it

I was responding to tcat, I meant that the reason someone would dislike an album is more likely to be based on their music taste rather than how much they "think about" what they listened to

I "think" about music all the time. But sometimes, tearing it apart makes you enjoy it less. I'm not trying to label anyone as a snob or whatever, and I know that some of you probably have studied music in the past and play instruments and all that. I know how it can be hard to turn that part of you brain off. I personally am a listener first and if it sounds good I just try to enjoy it and take it in instead of processing it.

Music firstly elicits an emotional response, at least most of the time, I would say. When something is so beautiful that all other considerations are irrelevant. I very much agree that music is as much, if not more so about feeling than thinking.

It can be engaged in intellectually but it's more of an innate feeling

@car true, now i see what you're saying

@tcat lord knows there are people who tear apart music for fun or just due to prejudice against an artist or style of music/genre. in this case, i was just bored and disappointed with the record as a gut reaction then tried to identify where that was coming from then put that into words. no reason to turn any part of your brain off unless you're not in control of what you're consuming imo. plenty of music that appeals to me on a base level that has nothing to do with my analysis of the record (off the top of my head, turnover, beach house etc) but this doesn't fall into that category

emotional/basic response comes first, analysis just comes in later when you have the time or energy to reflect on where that response is coming from. plenty of things that can be understood without being liked

@mycar

agreed, One reason why I don't ever rate an album or spend much time trying to understand an album that is a sound that I just don't enjoy. I just don't enjoy spending the time trying to figure out why I don't like it. I don't think I could invest much time in writing critical reviews.
