this album is totaly different from every other album, i hated it at first, but the more i listened to it the more i enjoy it. ok it dosnt have the amazing guiatr solos and the great riffs, but it is made with such passion and anger. its so powerful. still a good album even though it is differetn from all the others and lacks the solos

I thought the CD was good. Yes its different and I love their old stuff but most songs were good and I only heard Hetfield sing out of key a few times but he's in his fourties. I dont think they sold out I think people got to greedy I dont care how much money they have people should not disrespect them, they've only been good to the fans. If someone stole something from my id be pissed to and plus they dropped the lawsuit so get over it. I would give the cd a 4 they should have taken out Purify though. The lyrics were good in all the other songs but yes more solos please, if you have the guitarist and drummers you should give them more freedom.

"Sellouts?, The only thing we sell out is the stadium everytime we play." -James Hetfield

I agree with LarsAgi007 S-O-L-O-S, and like the reviewer said those tin can sounding drums have got to go. I will give them some slack because in the past they have made such good music. 3/5

Very good review. i agree with you on most points. The lack of production and solos irritates me every time I try to listen to it.

Tracks I can listen to: St. Anger, Some Kind of Monster, The Unnamed Feeling, Shoot Me Again. That's about it.

Worst track: Frantic. I HATE the druming and the vocals on this song. I was looking forward to a good album form Metallica, but the first song was a complete letdown. My vote for Metallica's worst ever song.

Metallica's worst album ever. Still gets a 3.5/5 Drums may be a little tincan sounding but it's still a good SOLID beat, which is pretty much the purpose. Drums and bass lock on every song, making a nice stable ground for guitar and singing. Sure the singing sounded a little... strained, and tone on everything but bass was off, but this was still a decent album. In fact was a great sound on some songs, but it wasn't Metallica.

I agree that this is definetly Metallica's worst album and a big let down to the metal giant that was Metallica. I eagerly anticipated this album and was highly dissapointed with the outcome and i think other Metallica fans will agree when i say that their older stuff is way better. But everyone has a shit album.

lars? in an interveiw in the 80s he says metallica should not be put in any "groups" because they do what they want and dont go by what other bands are doing at the time. and then in some kind of monster he says that bands dont do solos anymore and that they should stop doing them. so they stoped and succesfully put out one of the worst albums ever. nice one metallica

it isn't that great an album, if it was thrash metal, then everyone here would probably love it, but as people have said, the vocals kinda sucked and the drums uber-sucked.

uber sucked? shut up

One of the worst albums ever recorded in the past 10 years.

I think it’s about time someone brought some sanity to the proceedings. I’ve been slowly sifting through these 15 or so pages of crap and now find myself genuinely disheartened by the amount of ignorant “fans” who too simply pass the album off as “rubbish”.

I know everyone has (and is rightfully entitled to) an opinion, but constant mutterings of “under-produced” and “****ing ****ty drums” just confirms the naivety of the posters.

Cont.

My first point in defending this album:

The “raw” sound (or “under-production” if you prefer) actually lends itself to the style of music they were striving to achieve. The difficulties and strains they faced during production is reflective of the music - ugly. Finely recorded and perfectly scored solos weren’t what the album was about. It was about letting go. It was about breaking from the commercial hole that the last three (maybe even four) albums had put them in. They weren’t trying to pander to anyone. They just wanted to make music that would kick you arse. They did that.

Point 2:

Watch the film. Some Kind of Monster is not only a great documentary but it also explains how the album came about and really crystallizes the whole album. I believe that the record and the film go hand-in-hand. It took balls to open themselves up to the world like that, instead of hiding behind the perfect, god-like image that the fans may have had of them. They argue, they spit, they cry, they rock.

Point 3:

Listening to the album only once doesn’t give you enough time to adjust to the style. People have complained of headaches, and blamed it on the “uninspired” “repetitiveness” of the songs. I can understand this. I’m always sceptical (and annoyed) when someone tells me I need to give an album a few (even several) listens to get the “hang of it”. My belief was that an album should always grab you and engage you from the first listen. But now I’ve thrown that belief out the dirty window. There’s a certain satisfaction to be gained when listening to this album. Every song is almost a challenge. Do you want to be spoon-fed mindless, pop drivel? Or do you want to discover music just like you did when you heard your first Metallica album?

From the sheer honesty of ‘St. Anger’ to the beautifully stark ‘Unnamed Feeling’, this record continues to surprise and entertain. There’s nothing wrong with a challenge – it just makes the effort more satisfying.

The point is, people don’t listen anymore. They hear something different and they immediately distance themselves from it. When I listen to it, I hear a bunch of guys just rocking out and loving it. I plead for you St.Anger haters to just give it a shot. The louder the better.

Ugly? Yes. Bad? No. Listen with your ears, people.

I've listened to it all three times, and after that I just couldn't possibly take it any more. It's so laughably bad, I couldnt' force myself to listen to it anymore. There is absolutely no reason to have an eight minute song when it just repeats the first three minutes over and over. Every song is horribly repetitive, the vocals are horrible, the drums sound like shit, and the guitars don't sound much better.

And that "Some Kind of Monster argument" doesn't work. So what? They spent a lot of time just screwing around and wrote everything on the spot. Maybe that's why it sucks so bad. It wasn't very well thought out, or well written, and the sheer fact that it's Metallica makes me sick. This is worse than pop-drivel. At least pop wouldn't give me a headache after two songs.
