I was gonna say Fantano's 5 felt harsh but I guess that's the same as a 2.5 here

"I'm pretty sure the options (in Vernon's own understanding) were: 1. New Bon Iver album that's different from his other two. 2. No new album, cause why repeat yourself"
pretty much probably but he sounded his most genuine on for emma, roughly the more he gets backed by other instrumentation the less i feel

I'm surprised people ever went to Bon Iver for genuiness and mega feels - his stuff has always been verrr pretty but I've never felt he conveyed all that much true emotion. 'Re:Stacks' and a few others come close I guess but for me it doesn't handicap his sound anyhow, cos like I said it's verrrrr puuuurdy

dude im pretty sure the main appeal of for emma is the emotion

"I didn't use any vocal distortions for the new album. This is just what my voice sounds like now with my head so far up my own ass."
- Justin Vernon on 22, a Million"
Best RYM review? Perhaps.

The main appeal for me with For Emma was the quality of the songs/voice and the atmosphere. It's nowhere near something like Skeleton Tree, Hospice, Benji or Carrie and Lowell (for a few recent examples) in terms of feels for me

while we're at it, the atmosphere is also a crucial element at conveying emotion

True, the emotion is there, but for me at least it's not a devastator

People acting like they can actually make out more than like 5% of the lyrics when listening to For Emma, pfff
For Emma is great cause it sounds pretty, period

huh? I mean, For Emma doesn't have great lyrics or anything, but you can definitely make out what he's singing (or you know, read the booklet/read it up on genius).
But it's often gibberish and Justin has attested to using his voice as another instrument and not really caring about the lyrics. (Especially post-Emma tho)

Yup, for me Bon Iver has always been about the layering and/or prettiness of his approach rather than any deep meaning.
His music does evoke emotion though, esp nostalgic feelings.

Agreed with rowan there. Brings the feels very hard for me as well. His voice just manages too strike a very emotional chord.
