Aside from hearing the Blackwater Park album a few times a few years ago, I have never listened to any Opeth. Of course, I was aware of their divisive new direction and had seen the mixed reviews. I still went in with a completely open mind ready to enjoy the album, especially since I have my ticket to see them in a few weeks.



The album begins fairly strong with the first few tracks. There is also some nice lead guitar and nice passages in places, but man, this album sucks.. There is just nothing going on over half the time. It does feel relatively devoid of trying or life, and I usually can't bring myself to rate lower than a 3 on most albums.



Anyone who has seen Opeth live lately... do they play any of the heavy stuff live anymore? Or is it Heritage and on?

They play the old stuff live, but it doesn't sound good. They sound way better playing the material from Heritage onward.

Also they awkwardly jam keys into the heavy bits. Meh.

I never planned on seeing Opeth live, but after hearing that they can't pull off any of the old stuff, I'm definitely gonna avoid seeing them.

To me it just sounds like they're trying way too hard to sound deep and progressive, can't stand it at all and after like 5 listend and 2 days not listening to it I couldn't even remember a single song, not even a chorus or melody.
