Ruh roh. That's not very encouraging.
I just don't like the almost spoken word delivery. Perhaps if he were actually singing I wouldn't mind the affectation as much. In fact the one song I do really like here is the closer which is the closest this gets to actually being melodic.

Alright I guess I have to check this, the hype is too loud not to.
Only ever heard Abattoir Blues before

Cave's whole style is exaggerated, always has been - it's not really a criticism when that's the man's whole shtick, it's just personal taste.
If I don't like Cave's instrumentation and song writing choices on an album then his whole style falls apart quite quickly to the point I find him genuinely irritating. Luckily I enjoy both a lot on this one

Idk it seems exaggerated to me in the sense that the general tone is "ok people this is going to be a really miserable album and oh dear look at how miserable I am". I don't doubt that the making of this was actually cathartic for Cage, I just don't think the emotion translates very naturally or effectively.

He poured his emotions into this, don't forget - his son died.

All right Doof I'll hold out hope that the instrumentation and songwriting will appeal more to me on his other albums.

I get that Sounds - but emotion input does not necessarily constitute emotion output in the music or translated to the listener.
I'm just calling it how I hear it - and this just isn't really making *me* feel much of anything.

@FOS yeah read about that. Shame but apparently makes for an awesome album.
I want to listen to this more every second that goes by.

I get what you're saying. Everyone gets impacted by music differently, and you just aren't as impacted by the emotions.

The album is very ugly in places, but that's grief for you. I mean 'I Need You' is hideous in its delivery at times but that's actually perfect at that point of the album. It sounds like they kept a take when Cave was just mumbling into a pint glass and that is actually the perfect reading of that song lol.
It's a strange one, I can totally understand people either being bored senseless or finding this really bad.

I mean I don't hate this, a 3 is a solid rating, there are definitely a lot of good qualities here, it just doesn't coalesce into anything particularly affecting, in my opinion.

That's fine Sowing, I seem to be the only one here who doesn't get this - it's probably a personal issue. I'll take my (relative) negativity elsewhere.
I'm happy that you all enjoy this so much though! :D I really do want to love this and I'm genuinely sad that I don't (for now).
