Yeah, and I'm pretty sure it did. That 4 it's at now is considerably lower than its initial average rating iirc.

Yeah agreed... Like I said, I see the average becoming a 4.2

Not gonna lie, this has really opened up for me on listen #5. Any 4.5 or 5 I'd consider would be based on the story development in the back half and the callbacks to earlier Acts, of which there are plenty. It's all done extremely well, even if Revival and Gloria are kinda standard

I always liked it from first listen but I felt I needed to listen more to really appreciate it. Around the 5th listen is where it really hit me too

Yeah that average caught me way off guard, I thought the 3 singles were all "pretty good" and nothing more. The album itself is actually awesome though, so I see why it's rated so high, given its sense of finality. I think this will probably settle at a 4.2-4.3.

This still probably won't beat Act 2 as my favorite, I just love the raw emotion of that record. But Act 5 is proving to be a more consistent record throughout... Only time will tell

Yeah, so those who are listening repeatedly and starting to get it, keep that up. I was kind of underwhelmed and having trouble making out different songs on the first few listens. I drove eleven hours to see them on opening night in PDX, so I got enough listens to realize that this is probably their most consistent work. Literally everything except 'The Haves Have Naught' I'm really into.

Not mentioned enough -- I think 'Cascade' is one of their catchiest and most beautiful songs. That bridge when he hits that C note at the end is stunning. What a great chorus melody. Obviously, 'The Moon/Awake' is a great and interesting track. The Most Cursed of Hands is an amazing jam (3:39 when it all comes together) and is certainly one of their best. I don't know, it's just such a solid record. Keep going after this.

Also I sat down with Casey, Rob, and Nick for an hour or so a few hours after the gig over tater tots and talked about this beautiful thing. Maybe that's colouring my opinion. But as I had over 20 hours of driving this weekend, and I spent it listening to pretty well only this album, I've got high marks for it.

And I wouldn't have said that on first listen.

Yeah how good is that bridge in Cascade for real, one of their best melodies for sure

It's growing on me like I thought it would. It's a bit unfortunate, but I find it burdensome to start playing the album. Maybe that will wear off too.

I don't know if Crescenzo could write a bad album at this point even if he tried, but I'm really surprised by the 5 star, 10/10, parade of gushing reviews so soon after release. I've been spinning this nonstop since Friday and it's a solid addition to the Acts, but really it sounds like b-sides from the IV session (and I think they recorded it at the same time). Not as tight, not as engaging, and it's easy to find yourself wondering if you're still listening to the same track after ten minutes.

I like the disc, love the band - just think they could have sat on this follow-up for another year or so and really approached it as an album unto itself with concepts that had had some time to evolve and mature. This almost feels (sounds) like he just wants out from under the whole Acts thing so the sooner the better as far as wrapping it up.

Again though, a not-super DH album is still miles ahead of most. Only truly negative criticism - those guest vocals on The Haves Have Naught are horrible.

The Haves Have Naught is one of my faves here in part because of the guest vocals, damn

the only stretch of songs on any TDH album that ever made me wonder if i was still listening to the same song was Son/Father/Life and Death and only because the rip i downloaded had the transitions fucked up. there are some similar songs back to back but this isn't weird progressive experimental 3-minute-solo shit that you can't make out. it's a just a dense record that takes time to digest, as with every TDH album.
