Aight so some general thoughts on this thread from an Extremely Official Writer's Perspective:
It's reasonable to dislike pop. Like, everyone (even folks who say they listen to everything) dislikes or is unenthusiastic about some genres. It is also entirely reasonable to like pop, and I hope this review demonstrates that.
Where things start getting hairy is when we start ascribing reasons for liking things to people. I'm sure some folks like CRJ because she's attractive, and I'm not above admitting that this probably plays some part in my enjoyment of her. (We're all human!) Asserting that she's successful only because of her looks is where things start to get iffy. Women have struggled for years in pop music because of appearance, from Nina Simone (who was prevented from a lot of reach and fame and what have you because of her dark skin and flat features) to Joan Jett (who received much of the same criticism CRJ is getting here). Either way, talent goes unrecognized - either because the woman isn't attractive enough or is "too" attractive. There's hardly any examples of a middle ground historically.
If we distill musicians' successes down to their appearances, we not only ignore what they've done well (as in the case of Carly Rae here, who has made a second phenomenal album in as many years IMO) but also risk making the scene uninhabitable by aspiring women artists who may be deterred based on the relentless critique of appearance they will inevitably be subjected to upon their ascent. I cannot for the life of me understand why somebody would enjoy a harsh noise album, but I respect that other people like it for a variety of reasons, one of which is the music itself. Similarly, I'd ask that those slagging CRJ (and Katy Perry, and Florence Welch, and everybody else in the comments) accepts that for some people, myself 100% included, it really is at least in part appealing because of the recorded work.
Basically, what I'm asking is not that you accept this album with open arms. What I'm asking is a little understanding and empathy - that you let other people accept this for being good music (which it is IMO) without deriding the artist for things beyond her control. You feel me? We're all in it for the music here.

You're asking far too much of the site, people would rather feel like they're above everyone and assume why they like something thus having a sense of superiority or do it to get a rise out of people.
