Flea is the main attraction, but Kling's guitar skills are much more in the forefront than they are on I'm With You. Hopefully on the next album, he'll get to shine even more.

Flea was the driving force on their last record, Josh definitely has more of a presence but listening to this really just made me want to listen to other RHCP records and although I can appreciate the new subtle approaches I miss the seamless and almost effortless hooks that Frusciante concocted that were infectious. Josh has yet to write a riff that has been seared into my mind like Frusciante has done for nearly his entire career with consistency.

agreed with JWT man like there's a couple highlights but listening to this is pointless when there's a ton of great RHCP material before this

"Eh Flea's basslines are still the main attraction."

I disagree with this, I think he has been brought down a few pegs on this -- which isn't exactly a bad thing.

Flea always stood out to me as the best member of RHCP, honestly. so it is kind of a shame he was knocked down so hard.

The songs don't suffer for it though, Josh does a good job of holding interest. There's only so many times I can hear Flea rip on the bass, it's a nice change of pace.

We Turn Red, Encore and Dreams of a Samurai are some of the best this has to offer. At least those are the ones I mostly return to.

Even if he's knocked down a few pegs Josh really doesn't offer anything that overtakes Flea. He has nice orchestrations and lots of layered guitar work but there isn't a single track where there's a riff or a sequence that blows me away, where as Flea still has some grooves on here.

I think people are forgetting how influential Frusciante was, hell even on their weakest albums, like Stadium Arcadium, songs like Wet Sand demolishes anything offered on guitar on here and IWY. Josh does a good job but he's not Frusciante and this album, while enjoyable, doesn't hold a candle to most of the bands previous work. I even find Kiedis's performance on here lackluster and very uninspired.

The album isn't based around riffs though, it's based on atmosphere and tone, which is probably why Chad and Flea take a backseat on this.

It's preference. I've always enjoyed someone/band that focus on a good atmosphere, rather than how many riffs they can fire out.

I still agree Frusciante was an asset to the band, which is why the last album bombed so bad, but they've obviously gone back to the drawing board and gone a different way with Josh, and I think it works.

What atmosphere? Sure there's layers and complexity but I never got any strong emotional vibes like I do from bands that create great atmosphere. The Cure can make me feel morbidly sad and depressed to uplifting happiness with only a few chords, Converge makes my ears pierce and I can feel the rage and intensity, this album may be complex and intriguing but it certainly doesn't create any atmosphere of feelings and emotions for me.

i will say i like the slower tracks, the ones with the piano specifically, I feel like they actually do the atmosphere thing right.

I'm not saying this is atmospheric, I'm just saying I prefer someone that focuses more on tone and atmosphere perks my interest more.

I've always liked Danger Mouse's production.
