I mean more like "cinematic" albums that feature lots of short songs that don't really add much to the music. I always skip those types of tracks.

Unfortunately the average is painfully accurate... Weakest DT by far. I Don't feel like ever coming back to this.

"Fuckin retarded shit". "Average is too high". Lol. Most people clearly just don't get this album. It's meant to be listened to as an entire entity, and if you pay attention and follow the musical themes and let it grow on you, you'll realize it's pretty great. Very clear most people don't know good music when it hits them in the face. I very rarely comment, but I'm starting to wonder exactly what crowd uses this site these days. I can't help but think of Porcupine Tree's "The Sound of Muzak" when I see these opinions. Anyway, I'm done. Rant over

The problem(s) is/are:
1. The album as a whole entity is very repetitive. Even though there's fantastic musicianship, terrible flow and recycled material for 120+ mins. are exhaustingly bad.
2. Not only is the music repetitive, so is the story. It's basically "Star Wars but with a guitar instead of a light saber," as a reviewer said. That is one of the most used stories EVER. It also manages to achieve max corniness on this album.
3. John Petrucci and Rudess pretty much wrote ALL the album. The bass is utter silence and the production is horrible. There are also barely any interesting drum parts, which shows Mangini should've had a word on the album. Let's not mention that 70% of the album is just piano. Literally.
It's ok if you like the album though, this is just my opinion.

Mangini's drums sound so triggered. Man everything about his drumming is so boring

If you think this is a 4.5 then that's your prerogative, but failing to see why people can think this is poor is strange.

I've never liked ballad Dream Theater and this is two hours if it.

I totally understand why people hate this tbh, I just feel like people are focusing too heavily on the negatives
|

where are the positives though?

good guitar work, decent production (a bit bland at times admittedly), Mangini does have some great moments (people are too busy masturbating to Portnoy to notice *cough* Willie *cough*), symphonic elements are really nice, and I just think it's just a fun album.
