The textures and synths are the best parts of this imo, the post-rock parts are so good. Awesome prog metal too though, this gets so much right.

Yea man, sorry Caspian, this kinda took over as last years aoty for me. Even the "cheesier" parts like on Mob Mentality are fine and enjoyable because that vibe and technicality isn't the overall focus of the record. Take lessons DT lol

No "Echo and Abyss" on this one tho

I love them both the same. Older bands releasing subpar material now like DT or Periphery could take note, agreed.

On a technically impressive and epic level this wins out but in terms of emotion and the experience I'd say Caspian barely edges this out.
@Talons, Periphery ain't gonna learn shit imo, especially since The Price Is Wrong is nom'd for a Grammy.

is there anything worthwhile happening in the latter half of this album? because i'm on track three now and it bores me to hell so far

actually track four was really good

Aww dude track four is where things get considerably next level. You didn't like Skyline, Crater or Contemplation Of The Beautiful? Oh well, guess you're just not that into prog anymore.

yeah track four was the only one i really liked. the only track i downright disliked was track seven but honestly i found the instrumentation fairly bland, the production didn't help at all and most of the vocal performances were just underwhelming

Oh well man. Entering The Light is indeed fantastic. You didn't at least find Bjorn's vocals on Crater admirable? That's one of the best performances I've heard in a long time.

that vocal performance was dece but otherwise the song did nothing to me. the closer has some nice moments too

Maybe this just needs to grow but I'm disappointed. They remind me of Haken - technically brilliant but a bit lifeless. I don't feel any atmosphere when I listen to it, I just hear musicians reading from a sheet.
It's a shame because they're doing all the right things, it's just missing something.

I get feeling that way, I feel the same about BBNG. Good musicians but with no emotion.
These guys I can feel have the energy and passion but that's subjective ultimately.

Jamie also sent me a facebook invite, had a good chat with him about their next album and other stuff! He's such a great dude and actually cares about the fans!

I just don't see how this sounds devoid of emotion. This is one of the most affecting prog records I've ever heard. Opinions and all, but they certainly don't sound like they're just reading off a page.

slight generalization here but it's honestly a really difficult task to make a prog album sound emotional since it's not necessarily the appeal of the genre, and i don't think this one succeeds in that either

I'll agree with Artuma, this is impressive but not emotional (except maybe ''The Closest that I've Come'' and ''Contemplation of the Beautiful'')

Idk Entering The Light, Skyline, Crater and Contemplation Of The Beautiful makes me feel shit that most prog records can't even come close too. Like the "YOU TURN AWAAAAAAY!" part in Crater.

Prog can def be emotional, but bands do fall into the trap of "Look at how fucking good I play this guitar" (etc.) and forget to made interesting songs
Not really the case here tho
