Keys and voice on several tracks reminds me of them. More than it reminds me of an emo revival record. It's still an enjoyable album, though

OK, to be fair, I only think I know that one song, Fireflies or something. But I got reminded of that song a lot while listening to this

this isn't really emo tho, it's just slightly techy indie rock with some post rock influences thrown in

well not emo in the word's actual meaning but emo revival for sure

even that is a stretch now tbh. they got lumped in with the Midwest emo scene when formlessness came out which was fair enough at the time but i really don't see it anymore save some discussion of feelings and occasional twinkling. even the vox are way smoother and less whiny than before

This their best release and/or best place to start?

def not their best release but might be a good place to start for you pleb. i'd suggest checking out death to new years ep first though

depends what you're looking for. this is their most melodic and musically varied record but the debut is more intense, less polished and has more traditionally emo vocals

@jeff to your earlier comment, yeah that's true but they still have a pretty strong twinkly emo aesthetic
|

So the debut if I want more ferocity? Cheers.

well it's not ferocious or anything but yeah it's a lot rougher (and a lot better as well, tbh)
|

This fits pretty well under the twinkly pop Emo/ indie rock umbrella with post rock overtones.

@BandNewbac
"four out of five even though it isn't a cohesive album?
reads more like 3/3.5 to me"
It's still a really good album. It's not that it entirely lacks cohesion; rather, it just doesn't have that extra something that has each track perfectly transitioning to the next one like Whenever, If Ever had. (And I don't necessarily mean like Colors or other albums that literally bleed each track into the next). But very few albums do. That is the kind of trait that makes albums 4.5 or 5 for me. It's an album full of good songs and they pull off a lot of their influences without jumping too far all over the place. Debate was between 3.5 and 4 for me, but the last several tracks bumped it to a solid 4.

can't say for sure bc i haven't heard all this
but their previous stuff was definitely midwest emo (aka indie emo), there's no denying that.

i like potsy's soundoff for this lol

This was very good. If I were to have a gripe it's that every song bleeds together so seamlessly it feels like one long song. That may be good for some people but it's not my style. Stand out track is "Willie (For Howard)".
