I think it's unfair to assume Polaris was intentionally made to follow up or build on what Altered State brought to the table. I actually felt like the band had hoped to totally wipe the slate clean with Polaris. One thing that pops out that supports this is the more melodic/anthemic approach to the music with the rhythm section giving way to the vocal melody (contrary to the review) more often than in any other early release. A very good example of this is the excellent Tourniquet. I absolutely love that it's absolutely content to keep things low-key for the most part of the song- although it eventually explodes by the end. Sure, djenty, polyrhythmic parts are still present, but evidently not as widespread as their earlier releases.

What Altered State had going for itself was it felt like a more well-thought out, cohesive release in terms of structure. Polaris in contrast feels like just a bunch of songs lumped together without much thought to form an album.

But when it comes to the individual songs and songcraft, I think Polaris takes the cake. Definitely an improvement over Altered State.

Listening to it now. I don't think Dan having a range half an octave lower than Ashe is an accurate assessment. He just has a manlier timbre

overall this album is kinda poppy and sacrifices a lot of the metalness, but it's good for what it is

^^ Yep, I agree with the "poppy" comment. Definitely a more palatable album. Nothing wrong with that- unless you're allergic to even the slightest hint of pop.

^ I don't understand the "safe" comments. Safe from what exactly? From being eliminated in the next round? lol
