pretty fair score for an album that does nothing for you and doesn't welcome repeated listens

on that note, prolly should ease my rating down but :/

My attitude is off-putting in general, to most people. Don't know what to tell you, it's just hard to get such a powerful emotional impact from something from first listen and lots of other people, who are well seasoned/versed in the world of music, are getting nothing. It just sucks an is frustrating :/

Could be worse. Could be a NeO album with 1.5s flying around and people talking about Tim Charles is a pretentious a-hole (which simply isn't true).

The internet is a confusing place.

i know what it's like to want other people to share your enthusiasm about these things, but music is subjective. at any rate, we (the people who rated it 3 or lower) are part of the minority anyway - just look at the overall average.

at any rate, the review was great. just try not to get so bent out of shape if a few people don't like it.

The funny thing is, I've tried some genre juggernauts (Isis, CoL), albums with crazy high averages and those do nothing for me. So it's not like I don't understand. But it still sucks.

I've read reviews about concept albums before, and tried to latch onto that, but have come up empty handed. This time it clicked.

Well, you just named 2 post metal bands for one. Post metal this is not. Idk if their earlier stuff was heavier, but this is just post rock. There isn't really anything metal about this.

"it's just hard to get such a powerful emotional impact from something from first listen"

Not at all if it's the right one. I can think of numerous albums that impacted me a shit ton on first listen alone.

And that sucks that Isis doesn't do anything for you. They're consistently amazing. As well as COL.

@mongi no I'm saying I DID get a powerful emotional impact on first listen, and saying that it just sucks you guys didn't.

Yeah, I'll get back around to giving them another chance. Ulver's Bergtatt is one of my favorite albums ever and I started out with a 3.5 on that so you never know.

And really? Some parts definitely sound like metal to me (Mid-section of Last Dive, peak of Challenger Flight). I suppose that doesn't matter much really.

Oh sorry misunderstood you. Yes Isis definitely grew on me a whole lot and now they're my fav band atm.

I'd say this leans more towards post rock as a whole also.

^^^Which I never much listened to (post rock that is) so that would help explain why I don't find this generic because I don't really know what generic post rock sounds like (it sounds like this apparently lol).

I did hear some things in Panopticon I really liked. Another band I need to get into more is Neurosis, pretty posty I've heard, but heavier.

I mean, yeah, maybe it's splitting hairs, but I just don't think it sounds like post metal, and it's definitely nowhere near the vein of CoL or Isis

Well post rock also focuses on build ups to a climax like post metal but instead of riffs like normal rock music, the guitar is used to create a textured sound. Using rock instruments for non rock purposes as the guy who coined the term post rock said. Maybe this is a bit of both but definitely a bit more post rocky to me.

Makes sense. Wasn't thinking about genres when this came at me though ;]

I remember I really didn't care much for black metal, but then I heard Lantlos' debut and fell in love. So maybe after this, going back to Isis/CoL would be different.

Is Neurosis post-metal or...?

I guess so. I mean I don't really know how to define post metal at all I just know that listen to quite a bit of bands that are post metal haha
