some of his songwriting actually reminds me of Paul Simon, but the heavy themes here of addiction, cancer etc. make him more relatable

Once a wise man to the ways of the world
Now I've traded those lessons for faith in a girl
Crossed the ocean, thousand years from my home
In this frozen old city of silver and stone

Elephant is top five song material. There isn't a moment in this album that doesn't hit me, no matter how often I listen to it.
A little disappointed with 2018's country output, especially compared to 2017 and 2018, with the obvious exception of Kacey Musgraves. Still have to check out Trampled by Turtles from this year. Any one have some recommendations?

Always happy to see another Isbell fan! My second favorite album of the decade this and top 10 of all time.
Yeah this hasn’t been a great year for country. Check out Dogwood Tales - Too Hard to Tell if you haven’t, that’s my fave country of the year.

It’s been a fantastic year for country you shut your mouth!
But yeah this is phenomenal

Atari - I will admit you investigated a lot more country this year than I did and so probably found some gems I missed/didn’t bother with since I’ve been less into country lately than usual, though as this was your first time looking deeply into the genre you were probably likely to enjoy some things that I would have found just ok/rote for the genre - not that that negates your enjoyment of those albums, of course!

seeing cover me up live is just transcendent
happy he released a live album this year so that i can hear it whenever i want

I didn’t bother with it, seen him several times live and it’s a great experience of course but as the set on the live album is all album songs (and heavy on the latest album) I didn’t really feel the need for it.

did you see him last year when he was playing whipping post? fuck that was great
and did you not like nashville sound?

@boney: True, but since you haven’t been very into country lately and admittedly passed over a bunch of stuff , you maybe shouldn’t be declaring it a weak year for country. If I decide I’m not really into black metal these days does that make 2018 a shit year for the genre since I’m not really feeling it?
I’m also just busting your balls tho ;) this is indeed the first year I’ve truly explored country, so if it’s not a great year I have a lot to look forward to!

I saw him on the latest tour but he didn’t do “Whipping Post”, no, that does sound awesome though!
The live album also doesn’t have any songs from albums before this which is a shame as some of my favorite Isbell live tunes are from that era.
I liked The Nashville Sound but found it disappointing after the two masterpieces that preceded it.
Atari, that’s fair. Though a quick check on RYM indicates I listened to basically the same amount of country albums from this year as I usually do. You could argue then that my lack of enjoyment of those albums is due to a lack of enjoyment of the genre in general right now, or that my lack of enjoyment in the genre is due to the weakness of the genre this year. Doesn’t really matter though ;D

nashville sound has a few dud moments for sure, but i found it really strong overall, especially some of the more 'classic country' songs like something to love

It’s a perfectly competent album for sure but it lacks a certain punch in the songwriting that his other recent work has. I adore the same track off it that everybody does (you know the one) but everything else fell a bit flat imo. The pre-Southeastern albums had more highlights than Nashville Sound even if Nashville Sound is more consistent than they were.
