settle the fuck down kids

wasn't feeling this review, it kind of assumes everyone on the planet has and/or loves good kid maad city and it wasn't addressed as a standalone work nearly enough. Not to mention the concluding sentence invalidates the 1/5 rating
|
| |
good review but the irony is i bet i could come up with a list of rappers Kendrick bit
this isn't the Golden Age, rappers bite all the time and no one gives a shit anymore. cept me and KRS-One
|
| |
thats a fair point, the one about rappers biting all the time. But im pretty sure biting is one of the main reasons beef even starts. I think with that type of attitude, it allows mediocrity to slip in. I mean jay-z had influences but he wasnt no biter, same thing with asap and even lil wayne. Theres a fine line between being influenced and plain old biting.
And lets say Logic isnt a biter, that he was just influenced. He is still an awful rapper. He lyrics dont offer anything interesting in the already carved hip-hop canon. He just rehashes and rehashes and hopes to hit a sweet spot with unknowing listeners.
|
| |
yeah but does that warrant a 1/5? Doubt it. If being generic = a 1/5 rating then might as well start combing through your charts
and dishing them out. I like this review, again a fun read for what it is, but I think plenty of the arguments against it are valid

Generic albums warrant 1's allll the time, across all genres.
|
| |
Fair enough, but when the reviewer says "it's still a good album" then it's easy to be confused with his reasoning.
|
| |
Yea thay is a tad confusing.
|
| |
i don't think it would be confusing; if they read the review anyway, they'll read the part where he explains the whole -biting- thing
|
| |
Yeah he makes a strong case that the album is basically a rip-off, ok, but idk man something about this review still isn't sitting right.
I have no bias towards Kendrick or Logic though so idc in the end, so w/e. Just wish I was convinced. I'm still on the fence after
reading this like 6 times.

way disagreed.

why is that

1s should be reserved for things that are excruciatingly bad. if generic albums warranted 1s then numerous bands' entire discographies would fit the bill. basically hundreds and hundreds of bands are suddenly 1/5s and i don't think that's fair or even makes sense.
|
| |
i think youre forgetting how music (an arbitrary topic) works. Im not saying all generic albums should be 1'd. But 1's towards a generic album are warranted. The term generic covers alot of different facets of what music is judged off of. And looking at the details, like say droning drumwork or awfully generic vocals or rehashed riffs, warrants a 1 or any awful rating for that matter. DOesnt have to be specifically a 1.

I haven't listened to this album, nor plan to, but giving this album a 1 off the premise that it violates "biting" culture in hip hop is silly. There's very little true originality in hip hop, must we forget it started as a bunch of DJs mixing and breaking the break beat of James Brown records? "Biting" is a farce; as much as I love hip hop so much of it top from bottom consists of sampling other musician's work, imitating the most successful rapper of the day, and running off with what another guy started.
|
| |
An unfortunately shallow and illogical way to go about viewing certain aspect of the hip hop genre. With how well this review is actually written, it hurts.
