This has nice moments, but waiting for them is relentlessly boring

Aggravating that 4.18 didn't do anything with itself other than sound atmospheric

wat that track covers a bit of ground tho. It's 4.19 that doesn't really ago anywhere. Just chug riff/mid-paced tremolo passage/repeat.

Oh yeah, my bad I meant 4.19.

4.18 and 4.20 aren't that bad really, just not their best

Not sure why people complain about the length of this. Stop checking the track time and just let it flow. It goes by super quick after the first couple listens. They make you wait just long enough between the really good parts to build anticipation, but not so long that it's distracting. That's for me anyway.

it's not the length, it was the fact at times I was sitting there listening to it and 5 minutes later i realised nothing had changed. It's also lacking the punch the other albums have

I think those (relatively) long ambient gaps increase the punch. That's actually what makes this stand out to me, all their other albums are good, III especially, but everything kind of just blends and mashes together. Not so friendly for repeated listens. I like that they spread things out more here, and to me the main riffs sound way meaner and come off way more powerful than before.

If this sounded exactly like III just with different notes, people would complain they were stagnating...

nah of course not. I was really interested when I heard the electronics at the start of 4.18, but they didn't build on that. Each to their own :]

that monstrous guitar in the middle of 3.13 >

I'm glad this doesn't sound like their other albums

@amphoteric Yeah I think so too. I went back and listened to III just to make sure and yeah it's still amazing but I can see why I stopped listening to it It just goes on and on and on. This guy seems wrapped in tighter packaging or something.

@ChoccyPhilly I do agree that they establish a certain theme/feel/atmosphere early on and don't deviate from it. Like at all lol. That worked for me but I can see how the slightly more organic/progressive nature of the atmosphere on previous albums is something others would have rather they stuck with.

4.20 brings the black metal hard though...

To me this is just a lot more "spacey" sounding, heavier, and much less claustrophobic, which I love. I'll get crucified here if I gave my honest opinion of their other albums, so I'll just leave it at that.

lol it's definitely not for eveyone. First time I heard these guys was II and after about that many minutes I turned it off like wtf is this nonsense lol. Something just clicked eventually but I think for the pretty much the exact reasons you gave this might be my favorite Darkspace yet.

I can see myself coming back to this a lot more consistently than any of their other albums, even

III.

Wow, i thought III had tonnes of replay value. I can understand if you don't like it, cos not everyone will but the claustrophobic atmosphere really grew on me after a couple of listens. Still need to hear I

I is so raw compared to everything else. Minus 1 makes it a bit more listenable but they focused more and more on the atmosphere as time went on and it was good for them.

Don't get me wrong I played the heck out of III when it first came out but going back to it now it just kinda hums along in the background and doesn't grab me or shock me like it used to. Too early to say for sure of course but I don't see that happening with this. I'm over 20 plays already and it's still thumping in my head and calling me back for more.

I feel like these guys could pull a WitTR and make a completely ambient album, but make it really good instead of just average.

I would actually love that

^^^That's an excellent idea. But maybe more of a Darkspace Minus project, like an ambient version of one of their previous albums just to try it out. If it was a regular installment I would miss the riffs too much

there are plenty of artists out there who do that kind of "lost in space ambient" already
