How though? Ye agreed, Moon Above is really safe, as are the newfound orchestral elements in the last 2 tracks. River is really safe too, I've heard those harmonics in other Opeth songs and it has the same structure throughout OMG.
Played safe my arse.

Safe in the sense that if feels as though Mikael was thinking of the fans who were alienated by Heritage when making this album, hence focussing more on melody and giving the songs more structure.

It's not safe in the sense that albums such as Still Life were htough. I mean pursuing this full on "prog" direction was still a bit of a risk in itself I guess. It's just a lot safer than Heritage.

Still life wasn't safe it changed their style pretty significantly, and this isn't that different from heritage just more diverse and melodic and maybe a little heavier

saying mikael made this to appease the fans who were disappointed with heritage is a bit ridiculous, i dont think hed make an album that he didnt want to
that being said this is a p big disappointment!

still life didnt change their style much from mayh (which itself /was/ a huge step forward). calling it "safe" is crazy though. jamie im sorry but sometimes i have no clue what youre talking about

Still life wasn't safe it changed their style pretty significantly
It followed the exact same formula as My Arms, Your Hearse. I don't think any Opeth fan can deny that. The only difference was that it was cleaner and less black metal sounding (although MAYH doesn't really sound like black metal anyway).
@clim: I said it feels as though he did, I didn't say that was his mindset.

How was Still Life not safe? Where was the risk? (serious question)

Completely disagree, SL sounds more like BWP than anything else

I think what JT is trying to say is that SL didn't deviate from their style back then drastically, unlike Heritage

mayh and SL are definitely their most similar-sounding records besides maybe the first two. i guess in that sense its not very adventurous but in the grand scheme of things its still a unique album

How do mayh and SL sound similar? Musically BWP and SL are the closest
|

similar riffing styles, note choices/scales used, atmosphere, and vocals to name a few things. bwp is the most different of the 3 imo cause it has way more emphasis on dense layering, jazzy guitar playing, and a much less riff-driven sound (still has goat riffs ofc)

@Talons but BWP was released after SL, jesus christ. Mikael used pretty much the same formula on all of those 3 albums, how can you say they don't sound similar. this might be the first time I agree with JT lol

agreed with clim, mayh and still life still retain the old rawer side of opeth which was lost on bwp, which was more accessible and modern thanks to wilson

Sl and MAYH are still more similar than most of their other albums, except BWP

Of all the statements I've ever made on this site I thought saying Still Life was relatively safe would be one that nobody would disagree with.
I despair.

BWP just sounds cleaner that's the main difference but I guess all 3 are pretty similar
